Here's one from the "What the?!" file...Rio Grande is making the brilliant business decision to
    increase
the prices on many of their bottom-tier games by
    $2 to $10
. Yes, that's like a 20% increase on some of them. I remember when you could get INDUSTRIA or METRO for like $15...if you wanted 'em.

LOST CITIES is probably the only game on here that sells more than a couple of copies a week.

Alhambra $34.95 $39.95
Industria $34.95 $39.95
Metro $34.95 $39.95
Architekton $24.95 $29.95

Robber Knights $24.95 $29.95
Buccaneer $24.95 $29.95
Aton $24.95 $29.95
Alhambra The Dice Game Exp & (SA) $34.95 $39.95

Okay... that's weird. Do you have any idea how this makes any business sense?

I ask 'cause you've had some experience on the retail end of things.

I don't get it...

Many of the games on the list are Queen titles. Jay doesn't even put his logo on those ones.
The rest of the items on the list are Kosmos 2-player games. Maybe he's just updating his prices to reflect price changes that Queen and Kosmos have made, themselves?

Medici vs Strozzi might sell better if they re-themed it as Wu-Tang vs Shaolin, or at least Hatfield vs McCoy.

Most of these are Queen and Kosmos titles, so I'm sure the rationale is that the weak dollar versus Euro is the source of it. Yet best selling Queen and Kosmos games (like SHOGUN) are not on this list.

Which is all well and good if these are top-selling titles that need to be continually replenished to remain available and in stock- standing inventory has been paid for already. And I'm sure there's plenty of standing inventory for many of these titles.

However...from a business perspective, it seems like the better thing to do would be to axe these weak sellers and stick to proven sellers and new titles...I just can't believe we're talking a $10 price increase in games that most retailers can't give away.

And there's also the fact that many of these have been on Tanga a few times already...

Probably not- everyone knows Jay by name and loves him...he's probably "done so much for the hobby", unlike those nameless, satanic businessmen that run Mayfair.

BIG difference in raising MSRP and paying MSRP.

Step 1 - Raise prices on medium-selling games with large quantities left in RGG warehouse.

Step 2 - Get the Geeks to buy all the games "while they can get them cheaper".

Step 3 - Empty warehouse as distributors order more of these suddenly hot games.

Step 4 - Count profit you wouldn't otherwise have.

One thing I can say is that the two FLGS that I frequent don't have a lot of turnover on those titles listed, with the possible exception of Lost Cities.

On the flip side, they can't seem to keep TI3, M'44, Arkham Horror and Descent in stock.
