Review Corner is 2 (!?) this month. To celebrate, Miniature Market is giving away a game a day for two weeks starting Monday. These will all be games that myself, Charlie, Nate, Pete and the rest of the RC gang have rated 4 or 5 stars. You have to be on the newsletter list to be eligible, and it's just a random draw- nothing to lose!

You guys are doing good work. I think there are some elements of your situation that are very tricky, especially being tied to a retailer and what that means. But that issue never feels like a problem.

It actually means very little in terms of the content. We have the full support of the owner, and in conversation with him he completely understands the importance of integrity, we have only ever had one compromise (that I agreed with) and that was a review that was more about beef with a game's marketing than the product itself. Which is not really useful as the focus of a review.
We did have one situation involving a game you have heard about. Charlie wrote a ripping review of it OUTSIDE of MM and the designer emailed MM braying about how he wasn't going to sell his game to a retailer that has writers that trash it. He went on to offer his opinion of what journalistic best practices were, which included not really having an opinion. He stated something like if Charlie worked for the New York Times he'd be fired or whatever.
MM completely stood by us and told me to convey a message to the writers to not give in to this kind of pressure and that they back us 100%. I really appreciated that, especially because when this broke I thought it was going to be a "thing".
We aren't ever going to get around folks thinking these are shill reviews, but the proof is in the pudding. I believe we have some of the most fair and well reasoned reviews out there. Our gang knows they can be as open an honest as they like- so long as they support their opinions.

So did the designer manage to withhold the game from sale on MM?

I think they went around the publisher and paid more to get it from a distributor as opposed to direct.

Its always funny when designers are sensitive snowflakes about criticism. Especially to that degree.
I get that it can be tough to swallow on a project you've devoted a lot of energy to. But it's just an opinion.
If the game really is as good as the designer believes, then it will rise and be sold despite criticism. Claustrophobia being a success after Vasel panned it being one example. It took awhile to recover, but it did.
I kinda take personal umbrage against a product as a consumer when I know this occurs, because products born of hubris are rarely worth buying.
