So, family friend came to me and asked about a recommendation for her son. He's 12. I think first Con I went to I was 13, so I remember some of the game weights I was into.

She doesn't play games at all with him, but gave me some of the following interests:

history -
Russia -
Modern Russia -

well, I'm limited on what I have about modern Russia, but history/Russia immediately brings to mind Eastern Front WWII. I'm thinking Memoir '44 with the eastern front expansion.

I was given a bunch of wargames around that age from a friend's dad, so I'd like to pass it on. They bought him Stratego recently and he enjoyed that, so I think i'll gift him my copy of LOTR:Confrontation.

I've also got some games up in the current BGG mathtrade, trying to score the lone copy of Memoir '44 up to give to him. Eastern front is on Amazon, and not expensive. I've also got a Soviet AK-47 bayonet I collected in Afghanistan I think he'd get a kick out of.

So - any other suggestions off the top of your head? He hasn't played many games. Or...does anyone have a copy of Memoir '44 they'd be willing to trade away? got a copy of CIV a new dawn ready to leave the house.

Depending on his capability, Twilight Struggle may be a good fit. It isn't particularly difficult rules wise, but does lend itself to building a flexible analytical and planning skillset. I was playing AH games around that age, so I don't think it is out of bounds for a kid that age.

Kolejka. Although based in Poland in the 80s, it does give a good indicator for what people went through to buy goods under Communism.

I like the look of Kolejka. I'll have to see if that's available somewhere.

Get him into the Russian game of Gorodki.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorodki

A game clearly designed by Russian Slavic tribal nomads originally using throwing axes and the bones and heads of their enemies (maybe even live enemies).

I haven't played the Russian version, but, I've played and made the Swedish Viking version called Kubb. I made a set using lumber scraps.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubb

Here's a cool pic of the type of Kubb set that I really would like to make, but, I'm not a wood worker:

If Conan played a game, then he'd have a Hyperborean Kubb set.

Memoir 44 with some of the Russian stuff. Easy, fun. With toy appeal

I’d go with Redacted. It’s not super hard to get, is about spy vs spy, and is fun and thinky but not too much.
