Unless you show up with Monopoly, and then some guy pulls out a gun and blows your brains out.

Everybody is celebrating this video from Actualol (never heard of him) today. Publishers, designers...Rodney is even in it.

But how the fuck are you going to put across a message that games are for everybody and then show someone with the WRONG game literally get murdered?

I get the very tired, very dated, very shopworn joke about Monopoly, oh ha ha ha...but I have to say I was actually pretty shocked by this. It wasn’t funny.

Guess it goes to show the hobby is always going to have gatekeeping, even if it’s “not just for geeks anymore”.

I don't like that kind of thing anyway...but, that's really in poor taste.

Seems like armed assault short of shooting is more the style of These Games of Ours. Far more civilized to knife or bludgeon over Monopoly.

You guys crack me up with your insular exposure to board game media. Actualol is a former TV comedy writer (I believe) turned board game YouTuber that is trying to fund himself via Patreon. I find him mildly entertaining but rarely tune into his stuff. You have to admit that he put a lot of effort into the skit part of his musical number. Yes, the Monopoly joke is tired but I think you need to lighten up if you're actually getting offended by it. Tonally dissonant? Probably was intended.

As for who is Rodney...it's the Watch It Played Youtube guy, arguably the biggest board games rules splainer on YouTube. Also Has Quinns from SU&SD and Becka from GeeknSundry.

I don’t think there’s a need to lighten up in this case...the message is clear, and it’s the old “These Games of Ours” chestnut. But it has some weirdly incongruous violence that sort of undermines the whole message. It’s all very well done and clever...and then it’s like “oh, there are right games and wrong games and now a dude got shot”

I get that it’s a foam gun and all that...but the blood splatter, body, and message were unnecessary.

The blood splatter was over the top but I'm not the one writing/producing/directing it so, their choice. The whole thing is a bit odd "Board games aren't for Geeks anymore" which i will now prove with song and dance and cameos by Board Game Personalities who you won't know unless, you guessed it, you are into board games.
So, here are the same half dozen body odor/geek/bad personal hygiene jokes that have been around for decades put into what felt like a commercial for his patreon.
In short, it didn't convince me to want to support him. so an overall fail?
