Just saw that myself. Lamentable but not surprising. We've probably all been expecting the Final Asmodification.

Asmodee Order 66 has been issued.

Classic venture capital move, cut down to core material, lay off staff except for skeleton crew.

And Asmodee's entire customer service department. Total of about 50 people let go today. And Asmodee North America's current HR department consists of one woman who graduated with a bachelor's degree in 2019. Don't blame her, this kind of decision comes down from high in the organization.

Where are all those people that a couple of years back said consolidation would be good for the industry? None of them seem to be in any of these threads this time.

Sorry to hear about this, but I always figured it was a strong possibility--stripping a company for parts is a standard part of the playbook in many VC takeovers. I remember being relatively new to gaming and browsing what used to be the dizzying breadth of their range of titles. Their catalog now is downright sad compared to their heyday.

Their new corporate strategy is to do more with less. They want to sell more copies of fewer games, and ideally go mass-market like Hasbro. They also made almost everybody a salaried employee a while back, so they can make everybody work extra hours without paying extra.

Not sure how many folks read the full story, but this was their digital outlet. The made and released one game, the digital version of the LOTR LCG. Not to sound insensitive to those out of work, but pursuing that project was a head scratcher from the get go. I feel bad for those who lost their jobs, but I’m hardly surprised by any of this.
