What is your personal favorite board game first published in the 1980's?

Axis & Allies. It was my gateway game so I have some special nostalgia for it, but I think it roughly still holds up.

I wish there was a stronger modern title with a shorter playtime that evoked the same feeling, but I don't think it exists (not a fan of Quartermaster General).

Blood Royale is still an 80's favorite for me, warts and all. I love that a chart is needed to map out succession and that shit marriages and bad die rolls can leave someone in charge of multiple kingdoms. It is an unwieldy game for many, but there is the right mix of combat, negotiation, and skullduggery for me. Marriage contract creation has to be tightly reigned in time wise or that can derail the flow.

I have not played a bunch of the really old stuff so my response would probably be Shogun or Hero Quest. But I am very excited to read through the responses. Great thread!

Based on number of playings, easily ANGOLA. Of course I didn't actually start playing it til the MMP edition came out about a dozen years ago.

DURING the 80s I played a lot of FORTRESS AMERICA in college.

For most of the '80s, my favorite board game was Car Wars.

Arkham Horror 1st edition became my new favorite in 1987.

Civilization. Yes, it's all day but still a favorite. One of the holy grails of gaming is 90-minute Civ, and they still haven't found it yet.

AXIS & ALLIES was my gateway game, although I would not be too excited about playing it these days. Maybe if it was with my brothers at a family reunion, to really evoke the nostalgia feeling. Has anyone played the newer versions of A&A? Comments welcome.

The 80s game I would be most excited to play RIGHT NOW .... probably AWFUL GREEN THINGS FROM OUTER SPACE. Goofy fun. Maybe it wouldn't hold up, but I'm happy to find out.

Lucky it is 'first published' in the 1980s as I didn't play boardgames then (too busy creating havoc as a young adult), in my case there is only one in the running - Fortress America.

Gosh, I have so many favorites from the 80’s:

Talisman
Merchant of Venus
Can’t Stop
Wiz-War
Tales of the Arabian Nights
ThunderRoad

I guess Talisman, Merchant of Venus and Can’t Stop are the ones that still get the most play.

I forgot about this one! I actually still own it I think a few crew chits are missing- I had plans once to try and make a Hirstarts space ship to play it in 3D.

Favourite games published in the 80s:

Warhammer Quest 85. Still better than the other WHQ stuff.
Circus Imperium from FASA
Battletech - many all-nighters playing that
Gladiator from Avalon Hill.
Richtofen's War from Avalon Hill
Supremacy
