Game Soundtracks

Game Soundtracks was created by mikoyan
towards the back of the rulebook for Downtown: Air War Over Hanoi is a listing of suggested songs for playing the game. They give you a feel for the times and are pretty decent songs to boot. I generally listen to music as I play games (not too loud but not too soft either) typically I don't have a theme for the music as I just put my IPod on Shuffle Play. But here are some times when I do have a theme:

Sometimes for Axis and Allies I will play the Victory at Sea soundtrack (not too many songs better than the Song of the High Seas)
For Supremacy, I used to play the "When the Wind Blows" soundtrack. The Brazillian sounds like nukes popping off.

Any others?

When I play a Civil War game such as Battle Cry, I dig out my copy of the Ken Burns' Civil War soundtrack.

For a game like Mystery of the Abbey, we tune Live 365 to a station that plays Gregorian Chant. Likewise, for Settlers of the Stone Age, we tune to a Native American station on Live 365. WW2 games get either the Soundtrack treatment (like Victory at Sea) or the 40's Pop Tunes treatment.

Ave Caesar and other ancient games get the Ben Hur/Quo Vadis/King of Kings treatment (courtesy of the Cincinnati Pops CD).

Talisman is either a mix of 80s-90s music (if we're into BS-ing) or themes like the Anvil of Crom from Conan the Barbarian.

For most of the other games, we just play whatever we're interested in, but for old times sake, when we play Civ, we tend to play either Metal or the "out there" alternative music. The reason for that is that when we used to play Civ a lot back in the 90's, a local station would play Metal from 8:00 - Midnight on the "Saturday Night Loud" program, and from Midnight - 6:00 AM, the program was the bizarro world Alternative music on the "Nightwaves" program.

I only do this for certain games in my collection.

For Arkham Horror, I bring out some mixes that I put together for my Call of Cthulhu campaign, a mixture of creepy soundtrack music and old jazz music.

For either Slasher: the Final Cut or Slasher Flick: the Revenge of the Boogeyman, I play '80s pop music.

When playing any White Wolf board or card game, I bring out the gothic industrial music, like Lacuna Coil, Velvet Acid Christ and KMFDM.

Back when I was playing CCGs a lot, I brought out the taiko music for Legend of the Five Rings, and the soundtrack to The Last Temptation of Christ for Legend of the Burning Sands. For Shadowfist, I would actually play entire Hong Kong action movies in the background.

Every game should be played to Metal Warriors by Manowar. It's the best, terrible song ever. Check out the lyrics...

Every one of us has heard the call
Brothers of true metal proud and standing tall
We know the power within us has brought us to this hall
Theres magic in the metal theres magic is us all

Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers leave the hall
Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers go on get out
Leave the hall

Now the world must listen to our decree
We dont turn down for anyone we do just what we please
Got to make it louder, all men play on ten
If youre not into metal, you are not my friend

Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers leave the hall
Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers I said
Leave the hall

Now the world must listen to our decree
We dont turn down for anyone we do just what we please
Got to make it louder, all men play on ten
If youre not into metal, you are not my friend

Theres metal in the air tonite, can you hear it call
If you aint got the balls, to take it you can
Leave the hall

Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers leave the hall
Heavy metal or no metal at all whimps and posers
leave the hall

You are plain WRONG. If Manowar wasn't so bad - which can be quickly deduced by seeing the oiled up muscle men on the album cover - I'd argue that Metal Warriors is the best song ever. But it actually sucks.

Metal Warriors is just a rehash of Kings of Metal.
I also thought I warned you about your blatant lesbian behaviour on here. Don't make me ban your penis hating ass.

Ken will now drive past on a Harley with his Guitar Hero les Paul raised in the air. I suggest you give him the "Gloves of Metal" salute so that we can forget this whole episode.

Manowar has their good albums and their bad albums; it happens.

You want to know what I think is funny? That the Trans Siberian Orchestra is made up of members of Savatage, which once did the song "Necrophilia". Talk about your two extremes...

Yes.

Matt, replace albums with songs and I'll agree.

Frank, I was thinking of their album that came out after 9/11 (the name escapes me, but a friend who's a fan brought it down to get it autographed when he went to see them play here in Cincy). It had promise, but it was so-so in execution.

(Man, I might have to give up and not put "Mike L." at the end of my messages, since I keep getting called "Matt" by everyone.)

I haven't heard that one then. The last album of theres I heard was shit, can't even remember what it was called, but every album before that had at least a few rockin tracks.
