I don't get the complaint about troubles with 2-shield ships with Zoltan B. You don't even see those until what, zone 4? Maybe zone 3? What the heck have you been spending money on if you haven't added a way to do more damage by then...

The thing is that 5 points of damage if it cuts through the entire ship while every single shield is down isn't that good! You are going to need four hits like that to kill a ship, so it's not any better than any multi-shot weapon if the shields are down.Disgustipater wrote: The Pike Beam will do 5 damage when it cuts across the entire ship. Just pick up and additional weapon at some point to soften the shields enough for the Ion Blasts to take out the shields, then tear it apart with the pike beam.
Just compare it to the Halberd Beam which can easily deal 12 damage if the shields are down and can go through a single shield.
I had a couple runs with it and a couple Flak Weapons, which are the best to take out shields and it still felt underwhelming.
But hey, if you like it, you like it no shame on that

And come on: Glaive Beam. Everyone is powerless before it.

jeb wrote: I like the Beam weapons in general, but you do need to be set up for them and have a good way to take out shields consistently, even if only for a second. What's nice about beams instead of just a burst laser or the like is the damage across rooms. You can orange/red three or four systems in one shot and that's a big deal. Hull ruptures are nice with the Heavy Laser, but you can't count on it, and it's only one system.

One of the best parts of the design is that for any one weapon system, you need to worry about disabling something else. Teleporters need a way to take out Med Bays. Missiles need to disable drones. Standard lasers are slow as hell, forcing you to worry about enemy weapons. Later on you often need to worry about 2-3 things to take down in order, it's just great.

In the end game my weapon set was:
Chain Vulcan
Heavy Laser I
Flak I
Ion Stunner
...with Pre-Igniter and Auto Reloader. More than once I was taking out three-shield ships without them firing a shot.
I also had Hacking, Mind Control, and Drone, but the drones were only Defense I and a slot I would switch between Sys Repair and Hull Repair. No Cloak or Teleport needed this time. It was pretty sick. Collected 2153 scrap too, a new record for me, and in only 93 beacons.
One starting ship I don't like at ALL is Stealth C. Shitty weapons, shitty drones, no shields AND no cloak. Fucking terrible.

You always say that the important thing is surviving the first and second system.
The thing is... I *always* survive the first three systems, with the Rebel very near just behind me (ie. I'm exploring as much as possible).
My main problem with the game is whether I find *anything* useful at all.

In sector 1: Get your Engines up to level 4.
In sector 2: Get your Shields up to two units.
In sector 3: Back to Engines, get those up to level 5 and get the Doors and Medbay improved a bar.
In sector 4: Back to Shields, get those up to three units.
Everything else is secondary to these needs. Once you have this stuff, start shopping around. The only things you should be actively buying in the earlier sectors is Scrap Recovery Arm and... maybe that's it. You'll be handed stuff like dudes for wounding Slavers and weapons for getting some blue text options off your crew or buffed medbay.
Do this and you should have a pretty good kit for the last guy, but you'll still lose there sometimes. He's hard as balls.
