"are you in the F:AT steam group sir? makes it easier to find people to play with."
Uh huh, see top of page. It shows me as offline and not having logged in for a few hundred thousand days, presumably because I haven't downloaded the client software yet.

Glad to know it's not much of a problem!
(I hope my built-in mike's okay, wouldn't want a grouchy Mr S behind me with a shotgun...)
EDIT- P.S. I've also Trashmailed drmabuse00 to let him know that it should work on Macs.

Yes, TF2 is older, although they're both based on the Source engine. Graphically, L4D is more demanding, so you should be fine. But does that mean TF2 will also work? Is TF2 older since it's a lower price?

I think you missed the decimal point. Surely that should be "anywhere on the internet frequented by more than 1.5 people suffers from this".Notahandle wrote:

Maybe it's the other way round.

I only have a couple games on steam, and I'm not sure what people play. I suck at first person shooters, and currently own Civ IV and III. I'm willing to give stuff a try, but I don't want to invest alot of $$ in something that will be just me as a meatshield
Also joining the group today. (And I am a pro nerd, and have a mic)

Ok, I finally got my f'ing 1400$ paperweight fixed. It turned out to be an embarassingly simple fix. So simple, I decided to lie and tell everyone it was squirrels in the case. That is my story and I am sticking with it.

TEAM FORTRESS 2!!!!
- It's only $20.
- You DON'T need to be good at shooters to be a good player. Only the sniper (1 class of 9) needs good acuracy. The rest rely on other skills.
- It's far too addictive.
- Unlike Left 4 Dead which I play camly, you'll hear me nerdrage over the mic regularly.
I haven't touched L4D or Dawn of war since installing this game. Get it!

That does not sound too bad. I have a splitting headache at the moment, so I am just chilling. No bright lights, no loud noise. So.... video games are mostly out.
Take 2 panadol and start installing while you have a lie down. Then I'll give you a game when I get home.
The game itself if basically 2 teams vs each other, either capturing points on a map, capturing the flag, escorting a cart along a map, etc. There is a short 'movie' at the start of each map telling you what to do.
The 9 classes with their newbie appropriateness is as follows:
1. Scout: This guy is weak but very fast, and is basically the capture guy, but can make a great harrasser too (they have a shotgun). They recently got a 'scout' update giving them new weapons which you need to unlock that people are crying are overpowered. Good players are bloody great with these guys but they are hard to learn so not the best choice for you.
2. Sniper: Stand back and use your sniper rifle to shoot people. It's easier to snipe people in this game then most FPS but you still need to be good at shooting so maybe skip this guy initially if you are unco.
3. Pyro: Slipknot reject armed with a flamethrower. Fun as shit, and since you just hold down the mouse button and charge forward you don't need to be good at aiming to be good with this guy. Because he gets up close and personal tho expect a high casualty rate! Great for newbies, but learn to ambush from around corners rather than just charge at your targets head on.
4. Soldier: Guy has a rocket launcher, so you don't have to be too acuratew with him, just learn to aim at the feet to score splash damage. He is a bit hard to learn since the rockets are slow, maybe leave him for later.
5. Heavy: Slow big russian with a chaingun (think predator). No aiming skills needed because the chaingun has such a wide and fast area of fire. Basically you just move (slowly) forward blasting away. Good for newbies, but can be frustrating since if alone he will get torn apart - he really needs the support of other classes. But if he gets that support from the other players he can be a game turner.
6. Demo-man: A dude armed with a grenade launcher and sticky bombs. They are grenades so you don't need to be accurate, just pump em into the crowd and pray!
7. Engineer: Support class, and probably my favorite class, this guy builds stuff - you can build teleporters to move the team quicker up the map, dispensers which give out healing and ammunition to those near them and turrents that attack enemies going near them. If you hate shooting this is the class for you, since you will mainly be running around collecting 'metal' and building stuff. You can also upgrade the stuff you build. The main skills to learn with this class is where to build your shit and how to keep it up when it's getting attacked!
8. Medic: Another support class, and arguably the best 'newbie' class. Basically you get a medic laser thing which you shoot into your mates to heal them up (you can even heal them up beyond their max hp). You don't even need to be acurate with them since they 'shoot' into any friends near you, and the beam stretches around corners and stuff. So basically log in, find a heavy or pyro, zap em, hold down the mouse key and follow them around keeping them alive while they unleash hell - great way to learn the maps and the rest of the team will love you. After you use your medic laser thing for a certain amount of time it charges up to 100% and you can right click to give yourself and your target temporary invulrability, which is required if the engineer gets good defenses up!
9. Spy: Wierdest class to use and hardest to master. These guys can temporarily turn invisible and disguse themselves so they look like they are from the other team (disguise removed if they attack). If they backstab you its an instant kill, they can also put 'sappers' onto engineer buildings which will destroy them unless the engineer quickly fixes them. They almosty never shoot so you don't need FPS skills to use them, but you have to be good sneaking around. Watch out for pyros who normally do 'spy checks'.

Ha, like she's ever seen that.
Also, the Demo man has a Welsh accent just FYI

For those unfamiliar, I am a complete and total wuss for movies, and PG-13 is often a bit much for me
I soak up a fair amount from general culture. You would be surprised how much you can gain of reference to Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs having never seen them!
I'll check stuff out after work today. (*and my headaches typically resist drugs. Mostly Eyestrain, I expect)
I was also just told that unless I started DLing Team Fortress this morning, it is unlikely I will be playing it tonight. Ah well.
