Top 5 Game Box Art
I'm weak, so will start with an...
Honorable Mention: Iron Dragon
In the mid-90's I didn't play any war or train games, so there was about half of or one hobby store I didn't really visit. However, this quirky image always screamed out to me. I'd pick it up _every_ visit, look at how drab the back was and set it down. Little did I know some 15 years on I'd play my first Crayon Rail game and love'em. These are the perfect games to nurse a drink, talk movies and generally shoot the shit over. Anyway, this theme is kinda silly, but I love it. Unique in the 90s as it's a fantasy game without combat... you just wanna hustle some pipe-weed. The rule book has a gazetteer for 'role-playing' purposes and I think there was even a novel. ha!
5) GreyHawk Wars
One of my favorite wargame covers of all time. Love the lone wounded 'knight' facing down the horseman. Sure it looks more like a dark ages of Britain wargame (perfect for Britannia) rather than fantasy, but this image speaks of the emotions of medieval/fantasy battle (to me) far more than any other fantasy battle game. If Conquest of Nerath shipped looking like this instead of some cornball Warhammer through Warcraft lens I would have been all in.
4) Dark Future
I really dig how the 'bad guy' outlaw is the one showing human emotion and earning your sympathy while it's the 'good guy' sanctioned op that's a brooding silhouette in his interceptor. Very 'Vader vs X-wing pilot' like, but flipped in their roles. Also, more complicated than it needed to be, but cool logo.
3) Nexus Ops
Reminds me of this
and this
as just a few examples, and as a child of the 80s who spent many hours in dark arcades lining quarters up along cigarette burned cabinets, I dig it
2) Source of the Nile
This is a new one on me. I don't know how the design of this 35 year old image has had such little affect on game art, but this one is damn near perfect. The logo, the color scheme, the animals and pyramid faded in the background, the strong stances of the three central characters are all right on. This looks like the cover of a Robert E Howard novel. F'n Fantastic. Why are we stuck with bad anime comic book art when we could have had decades of bad-assery? Is it because of game #1?
1) Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set
Here it is for me. The one image that takes me straight back to my childhood when the world and games seemed wide open and anything was possible. I dig the exotic look on the characters and the dragon. These weren't shoehorned into one specific type of dragon or heroes. This picture set my eight year old imagination in gear like no other. Unfortunately, nearly everything D&D related after, say, '85 sucked...

This is actually fairly tough for me. If I'm fond of the game, usually I'm fond of the box art because it's associated with the fun I have playing the game itself. The art and graphic design can be utter crap and I'll still like it.
That being said, here is a game from my collection that I think is a pretty cool image all on it's own:

I made a Geeklist a few years ago that is something like this: The Euro Box Coverrepoman wrote: I was going to do a sarcastic post where I put up my favorite scowling jerks that inhabit the covers of some of our favorite "curry favor with the king" games but then I decided that would be too much work.
