Your Halloween Costume

Are any of you dressing up in costume for Halloween this year? If so, have you decided on a costume yet?

I haven't decided which venue I am going to on Halloween night, and that may influence my choice of costume.

There is this weekly dance thing that features '80s music, and their Halloween party is always great. If I go there, I will probably go as Donny Darko again, since the movie was set in 1988. Donny Darko on Halloween, that is. So just black pants, my hand-painted skeleton shirt, and a black hoodie. I bear a vague resemblance to Jake Gyllenhaal, though I am definitely looking to old to be Donnie Darko lately. No cover charge, a very good DJ, and a large dance floor. However, I might need a new black hoodie, as my existing one has taken a severe beating over the last 15 years.

Or I might go to the local goth bar, which will have a high cover charge and still be packed on Halloween. Two of the three DJs there are friends of mine, including one who works a day job at Fantasy Flight. For that venue, I would go as John Constantine. I've the exact clothes for it, especially the trench coat, which has naturally acquired a bit of wear and tear and a few small stains over the years. And I could easily do the stubble. The only tricky part would be the blond hair. I might try one of those temporary spray-on things, but I have no prior experience with that.

Or maybe I will wing it that night. If the spray-on blond hair doesn't look passable, I will wash it out and go as Donnie Darko. If it works, I might avoid the high cover and mob scene at the goth bar and take my Hellblazer look to the '80s thing. The character debuted in the mid-'80s and even had his own monthly title before the decade was over.

I have a Punisher costume I've used for several years, but this year I'm invited to a more risque party so I've decided to PVA glue cottonballs all over a pair of white jeans and white long sleeve T-shirt, and I'm spray painting a length of rope as a "tail".

Yes, I'm planning on being a tampon.

A "new" tampon, or used?

Emily has asked that daddy goes as a dragon.

Jeez...that's a tall order. Any tips?

I have wanted to go as Donnie Darko since the film came out, but I could never find a full skeleton suit that would fit me. And I'm one of those people who needs costumes to be completely accurate or not done at all. So I never got a chance.

His hoodie is gray, by the way.

I'm strongly leaning towards the John Constantine costume since the only prep needed would be the temporary hair color and the day-old stubble. However, it turns out that the temporary hair color is tricky business. Just for Men lasts too long, and the current formulation sometimes causes extreme skin reactions. Hair chalk and spray-on stuff is potentially messy, given that I am likely to work up a sweat on the dance floor, especially with a trenchcoat on. And it might rain that night. Wigs are non-returnable, and from what I hear, terribly itchy. The one potentially workable solution would be a blond mousse.

My 3 year old decided she wanted to be a vet and that dad needs to be a dog and mom and little bro need to be cats. At 3 she already wears the pants around here I guess.

That's weird, my four year old wants to be a cat, told mom she has to be a dog and that I have to be a dragon. That either means that she sees me as wearing the pants or that I'm a monster.

As long as she doesn't want to go as sexy nurse, I'm happy

So excited to have my girls going as Mario, "Aweegee" and the 7 month old as Toad. Goddaughter will be Princess Peach.

They are as stoked as us parents!

I've got a pair of dockers khakis and a red polo. So "Jake from State Farm" is always my fall back costume.
