Stupid Purchasing Decisions

I'm a sucker for nice currency pieces, but then you have to ask yourself how many sets of custom pieces like that you need. I have a nice set of underused poker chips anyway, just for these sorts of purposes. Something like the chips for Mare Nostrum are different because they make the game more functional (bigger, easier-to-see pieces) as well as better looking; these are just faux period pieces. Buy Brass on MM for $41 and forgo the chips.

... but I really thought about it too, having never owned or played Brass (but liking Steam, Imperial, and Power Grid).

I have only made two fairly stupid purchasing decisions, in all my years of gaming.

#1: The last time I went to GenCon was the first year in Indy, in 2003. I grew up there, so I spent half the time just hanging out with a old friends at a house near the convention center, where there was a keg and a nice gaming room. Unfortunately, the setting enabled me to regress in maturity about 15 years, and I got in a stupid argument with a friend. We patched things up the next day and then he pushed me to play a demo game at a booth. The game was about miniatures combat between tiny fairies, and was moderately entertaining. But to smooth things over with the friend, I pretended that I really liked it and bought the game. I have never played it again.

#2: Barnes gave War of Honor a decent review here, and I was already a big fan of the Legend of the Five Rings ccg. War of Honor came with four clan decks, but the ccg also came out with a boxed set of nine clan decks that were pretty well balanced and compatible with War of Honor, so I bought both products. I knew that I was making a mistake at the time, because L5R was a sufficiently complex game that only existing fans would be likely to ever play War of Honor with me. And even then, the local tournament scene was in decline, so I knew there was a strong possibility that the game would never get played. I bought War of Honor plus the Emperor edition box in 2012, and still haven't played.

I got into Heroscape because it was on sale at a Target. Clearance. This was about the time W4 game out.

I ended up loving it so much I spent a small fortune on it. 4x everything kind of stupid. Enough to hold a tournament in my house with 6 maps. And I mean doubles of all six.
