If we're throwing anime into the mix, I also liked:

*everything by Miyazaki that I've seen
*Samurai Champloo
*Texnohlyze (despite an incredibly nihilistic ending)

The Ghost in the Shell series wasn't too bad either, provided you didn't let your attention drift for even half a second.

Looney Tunes
The Simpsons
Pinky and the Brain
The Animaniacs
About the only anime I really like is Miyazaki. The rest is either too violent or preverted for my tastes.

All right, my picks:

Jonny Quest (Right there with Shellhead, original 60's for me)

Star Blazers (for a nine year old SW kid, that was a fucking awesome space opera).

Cowboy Bebop (A great series with an uncompromising ending).

Spider Man (Summers at my aunt's watching the funkadelic animation is still fresh in my head, even nearly thirty years on).

Tower of Druaga (Part comical mostly serious - a fantasy version of Cowboy Bebop).

and The Slayers (Take Record of Lodoss War and put it on its head.... You got Slayers).

-- *SMACKS FOREHEAD* - Futurama (Any show that can get your son dancing to the opening theme is good enough for me!)

My girlfriend watches a lot of anime, thanks to Netflix. Before I met her, I too thought that most anime was too violent and perverted. Of course, it didn't help that the first anime that I saw happened to be Urotosukidoji. Anyway, most of the anime that my girlfriend watches includes teen dramas, soap operas, magical princesses and strange comedy. Generally, it's not very violent fare, though sometimes the humor is kind of perverted. For example, The Cat Came Back covers all those bases in a charming fairy tale that starts out in modern-day Japan.

On the other hand, my girlfriend's all-time favorite anime series is Elfen Lied, which has excellent animation, but veers from cute humor to truly disgusting violence. Kind of makes me worry about her.

Off the top of my head.

Mostly 90's stuff
Batman: TAS
Superman: TAS
Justice League (pre-Unlimited)
X-Men
Spiderman
Conan the Adventurer
Gargoyles
Futurama

Anime stuff
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost In The Shell SAC
Planetes
Ergo Proxy
Crest Of The Stars
Martian Successor Nadesico
RahXephon
Record Of Lodoss War
Scrapped Princess
Twelve Kingdoms
Black Lagoon
Miyazaki's work
Satoshi Kon's work
Makoto Shinkai's work

Anyone who likes Miyazaki should check out a movie called The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Its very Miyazaki-esque, but works as good SF too.

I still watch a TON of cartoons, so this is my absolute top tier stuff.

Batman: TAS
Samurai Jack
Spectacular Spider-Man (by far superior to the 90s one)
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012 version)
Dungeons & Dragons
The Real Ghostbusters

Josh did you ever watch Batman: Brave and the Bold? I freaking love it and hate that it’s kind of been forgotten. Truth be told, I like it almost as much as BTAS. It’s extremely goofy- much more 60s Batman and not really dark in any way. I mean, there’s one episode about the Aquaman family vacation.

Thing is, it goes WAY DEEP into DC lore- more than anything else I’ve ever seen. They pull out characters like Gentleman Ghost, Cat Man, the Blackhawks, anything. Doom Patrol are in a couple of them.

It’s just really fun...one of my favorite cartoons for sure.
