Eh? They've done it in the past. Third ed 40k had a limited version for a brief time with a
metal captain
. They do it fairly often with army deals as well (most recently Space Marines, Tau, Dark Angels). The new set will be available as usual just without the chaplain figure.
Nope. Dread Fleet was last year and Space Hulk was 2009 so the next one should be next year (fingers crossed for Blood Bowl though there was the 25th anniversary last year so they missed the boat on that one). Then again GW has habit of changing policy/strategy or whatever every so often. It's hard to say if they'll keep releasing these one offs much longer. It's probably much easier than supporting entire lines like Necromunda, Mordheim and the like. Not to mention it doesn't fragment the market and the limited character guarantees they fly of the shelves. Quick easy money if you ask me. They should be coming up with them at least every year. GW fans will gobble them up even if they are shit. Just look how excited people are about Relic.
Oh shit I just had a look and you can get Dreadfleet anywhere. I thought it sold reasonably well. Not like Space Hulk obviously, but you can't beat the fucking legend.
The problem with Dreadfleet was that it had an identity crisis. If it's a self contained game then why include a ship for pretty much every faction? It looks completely incoherent and doesn't appeal at all to fans attached to particular factions. They won't be appeased by a single ship. Unlikely that it was meant to gauge interest and possibly follow up with expansions. So why the fuck do that?
The sad part is that if it flopped that can mean the end of the one off GW board games. The GW bigwigs are fickle as hell and might thing Space Hulk was a fluke. No it wasn't, it's just a great game with striking visuals no mater which edition. Dreadfleet can't touch that. Not that there are that many old GW games I'd like to see reprinted. Blood Bowl comes to mind, maybe Gorkamork, Mordheim and Necromunda (these 3 would need a serious rules revision - all are based on fantasy/40k ruleset which were already dated 15 years ago). I wouldn't mind a brand new game though, if they hired some actual designers instead of rehashing same 2 games every couple of years. When it comes to tons of awesome plastic minis you can't get much better than GW big boxes.
Yeah it's just the new 40k starter set. The limited edition isn't that bad a deal either being just $7 more than what it will be for the normal edition. Chaos cultists are looking pretty damn cool.
Someone here has had to have played 40k, is it fun? Seems like an okay time to buy in, what with the new edition just out, the rulebook being included in this set, and two decent factions... I can sucker someone into trying this with me.

As a hobby where you paint your army, make up a history for it and get really into the theme and back story in addition to playing it is OK. As a game itself not so much (completely lacking in balance, ambiguous rules, etc).
They screwed me on DreadFleet (which now that I'm painting again, I kind of wish I'd never sold for less than half what I paid....) and since the Reaper deal kind of makes this look sad and pathetic in comparison...
I have no desire to be active in 40k again, but I wouldn't mind the ability to do a skirmish here or there. If there were more scenarios (other than six of which two are solitaire) a play mat and some scenery I'd be all over this. Oh, and the forces would need some balance which these starter sets are notorious for being unbalanced.
Yeah, there is that, but I guess what I'm getting at is something more like Dreadfleet. A complete game in a box with everything that you'd need in one package.
