Anyone have any idea how many points of orks are in the starter box?

If you don't get an answer out of someone on this before late tonight, I'll dig up a recent issue of White Dwarf ["minis porn"] and see what they used in the recent battle reports. One of the staff is using them in a contest, and he has referred to it as a 1,000 pt. force or so, but I think he had a couple of vehicles that weren't in the box set...

If anyone has the points value of the Ork battleforce as well, that'd be awesome.

I've got some co-workers that are starting up some 40k. Being a fantasy guy, I never played 40k in the past, so I'm thinkign about giving it a shot. The necrons have a killer 1,500 pt set for only an arm. I think I'd prefer the mad max nature of the orks, but only if I can get an army near the $200 range.

i have no interest in being competitive, I just want some biker boyz to tear @##$% up.

Jack

Sorry for the lag. I found my issue of WD, but they only refer to the guy has playing in 1,500 point games with the contents of the Assault on Black Reach box, but I can't get a point total breakout or get a sense of what he might have added to the contents of the box. Unfortunately, I don't know how to do the math to work out the possible max points when you start factoring in wargear on the various Ork mobs...

However, the forums over at warseer.com can almost certainly answer your question in under 30 seconds.

There's a thread on the box in question here: warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136212&page=55 [that's the last page]

EDIT: Actually, I just found a thread on building an Ork army out of the AoBR box and he uses 2 sets of AoBR Orks to get to 1,000. I presume that since the HQ units [always big points] aren't duplicated, you're looking at 600-750 points of Orks in that single box. You'd need 2 sets plus at least another box of something--armor, vehicles, special characters, whatever; to get you to 1,500 points or so. You would, however, have a nice start to a SM army too with the AoBR box.

Thread in question is here: warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=170361

Dogmatix,

Thanks for the links and the research! I understand there's a new battlewagon coming out as well. The vehicle minis look really cool, it'll be tough to not to want to buy 'em all.

Having never played 40K before, I wonder if the Necrons would be a better choice, since they have few units and look like next to no upgrades. I'll have to think on this some more.

Thanks again!

(I was a big fan of Asterix back in primary school. Nice name!)

I'm not a WH40K player [though there are a few 'round here], but just from reading that glossy minisporn mag that is White Dwarf , it strikes me that you'll want to invest in a Necron monolith somewhat early on in addition to the giant pile of (resurrectable) plodding troops.

One thing the necs have going for them over the Orks is that they're way easier to paint in large numbers as they can be easily "dip-painted" [undercoat and basecoat sprays and then a dunk in a thinned lacquer or ink wash to fill all the detail nooks and crannies--while they won't have that "agonized over every highlight" look that turns folks on, it certainly is fast and easy]

Yeah, I'm vary familiar with the dip, and gw's new washes are awesome as well. I can have a very good looking necron force of 1,500pts painted up in a month. The ease of paint, lack of options, and the fact I can get my hands on their 1,500pt battlebox force for only $150 lead me to believe this will be the fastest, cheapest, easiest way to get into 40k.

You should buy a few minis and paint them up if you want to try it out. Next year my plan is to create a pit and gladiator stables for the for free gw mini-game Pit Fighter. It's a total vanity project, but should be a lot of fun.

Whenever I get the itch to play 40K I pop in Dawn of War. It's surprisingly effective.

:cheer:

I agree--and I wish I could find my damned Soulstorm disc so I can get back to playing the newest forces [fuck but I hate DRM on shit I PAID FULL FUCKING RETAIL FOR...].

I do wish, though, that they'd do a 40k version of the WFB game that came out 2 years ago--Mark of Chaos. It plays *a lot* like the desktop game--set formations, morale, challenges, etc. No resources and other classic RTS crap [though DoW, like the WWII game Relic did, is definitely a nice new take on the RTS model] cluttering up the "tabletop experience" offered by the game.
