Stripping paint from minis

I just got a copy of Blood Bowl 3rd Ed. in a trade, mostly unpunched with a printed and bound copy of the most recent edition of the Living Rule Book. I got to play this weekend a little, actually. I had a ball.

It also came with a third team, Dark Elves. Hey, cool! They're painted, but it's a dreadful paint job, hilariously awful. I'd like to strip the paint off and get them down to bare metal. What's a good way to do something like that? The crappy paint job actually extends to the bases as well, so I'd prefer something that wouldn't damage plastic, but if that's not possible I can just paint over those.

I don't speak fluent "miniaturese" so any help is appreciated.

Go over to the automotive store and get yourself a jug of Super Clean or Purple Power. Pour some into a bucket/dish you don't care about and let the minis sit in that for a day or two. With the help of an old toothbrush, the paint will flake right off

Exactly what I was going to recommend.

Not always true, Josh - it depends on what it was sealed with. If they were dipped, then it becomes MUCH more of a pain in the ass. If they're METAL MINIATURES, drop them in a bucket of brake cleaner over night and then use a stiff brush to clean them off. That shit will strip ANYTHING off.

If they're plastic, Simple Green and a brush works well but eats glue if it's in its concentrated form. Watered down, I don't know. The ~MAGIC STUFF~ though, is oven cleaner, the spray kind like Easy Off. Spray on and scrub. The stuff peels right off.

I've heard of Purple Stuff working, but I've never tried it. Thankfully.

Thanks guys.

They are metal miniatures, but with plastic bases. I assume the brake cleaner would eat away the plastic but good?

Brake fluid. Let them soak for a day or so. Toothbrush. Done.

Does not harm plastic.

Brake fluid will eat come kinds of plastic, especially ABS. The best thing would be to simply put new bases on anyhow.

FRP Games sells ArmsKeeper bases CHEAP AS HECK. I just got another 50 30mm lipped bases for 7.99$ Noble Knight sells them too.

EDIT: Nate, I have both an ample supply of bases and a jug of brake cleaner. I can run an experiment tonight if you wish.

EDIT2: BRAKE FLUID WILL EAT RESIN.

If you felt so inclined, I wouldn't stop you. I won't get around to it for a while anyway.

I assume bases can just be purchased at any game store that sells minis?

For the most part. The GW ones are more expensive and don't usually have lipped bases (my preference, but not a requirement).

The BEST bases of all are US Nickels. Just glue a model to a base-coated nickel and then add whatever flocking or terrain as you see fit. They cost exactly 5 cents, have an outside diameter of ~21mm and are perfect for many GW models. A US Quarter is also very good with an OD of ~30mm, but it's more expensive, about 4 dollars more for a pack of 50 than Armskeeper bases.

I have about 20 cracked earth bases sitting here too, if you want them. They're from "Secret Weapons Miniatures" and are pretty damned nice. If you want them, just tell me where to send them and they're yours. I've standardized ALL of my models on Armskeeper bases, so I will never use them.

If I'm not mistaken, they're 25mm and these:

I also have another fifty or so other bases, but they're painted and need to be painted over if you (or anyone needing them):

I've used brake fluid on some 2nd edition plastic genestealer hybrids (that were painted thick.) Worked well, some of the limbs came unglued and it took some scrubbing to get the paint in the crevices to come off, but the minatures were not damaged.

i always found that white spirit did a pretty good job, barely had to use a brush afterwards, but i suspect a protective overcoat would limit this method.

The safest most non toxic AND effective paint stripper I have ever used for minis was Simple Green. For a single mini I'd take a shot glass put the mini in and fill it with the stuff. Leave it in for 24 hrs. Theres no toxic fumes- in fact you can hold it under your nose and all you smell is minty freshness. After the 24 hres take the mini, run some hot water over it and go at it with a toothbrush and toothpick if need be.

Will not hurt resin or pewter.

Treehugging paint stripping. Booyah.

Let me emphatically second the Simple Green suggestion. Stay far away from any sort of break fluid or antifreeze or any other highly toxic stuff--a few miniatures aren't worth the risk to your health.

One other item I didn't see mentioned which is actually more powerful than Simple Green is Dawn Power Dissolver. I believe it has also been rebranded as Dawn Oven Cleaner or Grill Cleaner. It works even more quickly than Simple Green and just as effectively on both metal and plastic.

I've stripped about a hundred minis in the past and after much experimentation these are the two best options.
