Has anyone played with this box set? It's from 2013 and was supposedly a VERY LIMITED EDITION but it is still available. Very little by way of reviews on it, but it is apparently a self-contained game with set scenarios using just the minis in the box (Bilbo, dwarves, Gandalf, assload of goblins). My son has suddenly gone nuts for The Hobbit so I was thinking about checking it out with him for a Christmas gift...it's GW priced though. There is a dude selling one for $40 on BGG but he didn't respond to me. Anybody tried it?

isn't it the starter box for the hobbit minis game?

I haven't played gws the hobbit game, but I understand it uses their lotr system. I played legends of the old west, also with the lotr system, and it is _very_ good. better than mordheim or necromunda. If it uses that system you're luck.

Edit: I recall many wanting wfb/AoS to adopt the LotR system. I think you'll like it.

what about hobbit boardgames? you'll be able to get into them cheaper. that Knizia game? the deck builder based on that DC one is supposed to be good. we really liked the talisman lite ffg game (I think this has a new publisher).

I have the Knizia dice game and his other Hobbit game (both are really good). I wanted to see about this because I really don't have nearly enough sprues of unpainted, unassembled miniatures and I won't until I am able to build a small cabin from them.

Ha!

You know...now I'm thinking this set and GW's mines of moria would be a great pair and be all the lotr minis game I'd need. I long thought the battle of five armies based on Warmaster would one days be my lotr minis game, but it never hit the masses like these and goes for stupid money. Especially the blister packed units...

Yeah? What's the low down on it? I've never looked into it much.

Its been about 8-9 years, but two bits that stood out to me where in shooting if you get hit, but don't take damage you essentially have to take cover. Range attacks may not kill you but are great for suppressing an opponent, pining them down. Felt natural. In melee, as you battle from round to round the models move. So, if one model wins the round but doesn't kill the opponent, the opponent moves back some (maybe an inch) and you can follow. With this you get the feel of beating back enemies or live duels moving around the battlefield. Of course, being from the mid 00s the system is cleaner than mordheim or necromunda. I think it's a rick priestly system but could be mistaken.

Edit: iirc, there's a cool activation thing where if you're within so many inches you get some sort of reaction. Damn...I wish I could remember exactly what or how it worked. I remember really liking the game.

I've played a fair bit of the lotr system. The earliest incarnation is a push/pull snoozefest, but the later iterations are pretty good.

This is just the latest in the lotr line. As for this particular set, its OK. The goblins swarm and the dwarves soak it up, as one would expect.
The dwarf models are interesting and a cheap way to get the band. Gandalf is a decent model too.

The star is the goblin town scenery. Otherwise, its a pass.

This reminds me, I really need to put my horde of gw lotr stuff on eBay. I love it dearly but I realize that I'll never paint them or even assemble the thousands of minis that I have on sprue and blisters.

I still have my legends of the high seas stuff, and it satisfies my lotr engine craving.

Am I remembering the combat to this system correctly?

Playing Legends of the Old West, and the posse's low model count, I thought the system was very clean. LotOW was basically LotR combat with Mordheim campaign bolted on. I would assume Legends of the High Seas isn't much different. However...I've never even seen a LotHS table. What do you play on, ships? Port towns? It's pirate skirmish, correct?

Though I enjoyed LotOW there didn't seem to be enough elves or bolters for the others. That, and the buildings and train I had were a pain to store for how little it was getting played...I sold it all off. Wish I still had the books though. Those Warhammer Historical books aren't cheap now.

EDIT: Do you have the Mines of Moria set?

Sorry, no moria set in box.

I only played legends of the old west twice, and while I know there were a few differences to high seas, they were inconsequential.

The play is basically the same, but you do get to use ships and have port royale type ship to ship combat and boarding actions and piratical bombardment of port towns along with land based skirmishes. Tables are like port towns and such.

I'll find the link to my French fleet.

The Laketown (the multipack is sold out right now), Ruins of Osgiliath multi-pack, and Goblin Town Multi-pack seem pretty reasonable. Can the discount guy do terrain?

They don't list any Hobbit stuff, but I'm sure he can get it. If Doc's won't, Chaosorc should be able to.

Dude on BGG got back to me...getting this for $40.

Worth it just for the models.

what about just buying some of these and playing hobbit heroscape? I'm sure there are good custom cards out there. play hobbit right away with no assembly or painting.

then sell me your set for $40...

Looks like I may have nicked the Moira set for $30...

What the heck is that figure in the top right? Is it supposed to be Azog or a really tall dwarf?
