Who has unpainted Space Hulks?

I'm ashamed to say I never painted mine even though I bought the 3rd edition in 2009. I did however remove all the flash (I think) and applied "Green Stuff" to the bases to make the models more stable.

I'm not a fast or even decent painter and this project is too much for me. I limit myself to small paint projects lately, like I'm currently painting my TMNT Shadows of the Past set, BUT so I can actually complete the task, I'm limiting myself to just the four turtles. Even then it takes me way too long - I finished Michelangelo and I'm working on Leonardo so far...

At any rate, I don't think I can realistically say I'll get to painting Space Hulk, and I'm ok with that. Maybe if I somehow get more time on my hands.

When I was unemployed for nine months, I didn't have time to finish painting Space Hulk. I treated my job search like a full-time job, plus I was tutoring my girlfriend in her business classes and helping her write papers for her non-business classes.

One of the reasons I've been so slow painting is because I couldn't find anything good to base them with. Sculpted bases are too expensive, and it's a pain trimming the slot-tabs off the models. I got a sheet of embossed plastic with a metal grid effect but it was a pain to cut into circles and it looked awful painted: the texture just wasn't crisp enough to shade effectively.

Until, one day, passing by a builder's skip, I saw this and had a revelation:

It's plasterer's joint tape. Cheap as muck, easy to trim to the right shape and size and paints up beautifully like a metal mesh floor.

Sure, I can do March. That'll give me time to sort out the basing.

Do I need to prime my partially painted figures again? The last time I primed them was 8 years ago.

No. If anything, the paint will stay better on them with the primer aging this long.

I have no science to back this up, just anecdotal experience. But Ive used various primers for metal and plastic models. some models went years without pain applied. After painting aged primed figs, I noticed that paint shed (paint chipping off, but primer being left behind) was drastically reduced over the course of their life compared to those who were painted over relatively fresh primer.

Long story short, dont reprime them unless they somehow managed to become heavily abraded. Dust can be washed or cleaned off without any ill effects on prime.

Pug, and anyone else, I'm going to have to do Space Hulk in April.

I've got an AoS warscroll I need to complete by the end of March for the Malign Portents campaign, and also a BB team I have to have done for a tourney on April 7th.

If people want to get going in March, that's cool, but I'm going to shoot for having my set done by the end of April.

Replied by Pug on topic Who has unpainted Space Hulks?
The weather was pretty nice yesterday so I primed up most of my Space Hulk in Mephiston Red. Going to go for a red theme for both genestealers and terminators to save some time. Not sure when I will actually paint them since time is a precious commodity these days.... but I want to get a few painted up in the next few weeks.

I've ordered the necromunda bases I want to use to base the minis with and this past weekend I picked up the sandpaper to file off their existing base.

Primed some AoS and BB models last night tough.
