Lately I have been loving the hell out of Frostgrave, and it got me wondering, is there a skirmish-style game that is set up like a one vs. many situation? I'm thinking almost like Descent but a true minis game that focused on loot and combat, much like Frostgrave if someone was controlling monsters and creatures vs. multiple wizards.

Strange Aeons almost comes close, but it's just 1v1 and is really more of an asymmetric faction skirmish.

I imagine that some full on RPG systems could be used to do this, but the ones I have seen tend to focus more on the role playing / story aspects and certainly don't get into measurements for movement, range, etc.

Barring the one vs. many setup, is there a minis game that handles co-op in this vein? The only one I can really think of is Mantic's Walking Dead, but that game is nowhere near as cool as Frostgrave.

Battlestations is pretty much this. 2nd edition is pretty damn sweet, although it's perhaps more of a board game.

There's a few pure coops out there. Two Hour Wargames does this a lot, with All Things Zombies and FNG, which are both pretty good albeit messy.

Warhammer Quest: Shadows Over Hammerhal might be the game you want.

Isn't that grid-based movement on flat planes?

I assume FNG stands for something?

The title is actually FNG. It's a term that originated during the Vietnam war and means "Fucking New Guy", referring to green recruits fresh into the bush. It's a Vietnam pure minis game where you run a squad through the war. Characters will enter and leave, via death and retirement as their tour ends. Many of Two Hour Wargames' rulesets work this way though, with charts you roll on to generate enemy movement/actions and then a campaign element to continue your group as you go.

Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader was a GM driven skirmish game.

Not a very good one, but there were seeds of awesome in it, naturally.

Strange Aeons.

One side plays the evil side, the others play Threshhold lists. Alternate nominations between the bad guys and each player.

As Charlie said, Any of the 2 hour wargames stuff is prolly the closest to this. But better played solo against the AI if looking for the one vs all style. Just pick a genre/theme/period you like and they like have a ruleset that covers it.

I feel like I'm always plugging A Fist Full of Kung Fu. In that system you really only have 1 model that matters and the rest of the bodies kinda there to fight the other chaff and will crumple up against the hero, but it is very much two sides fighting with one hero each and it doesn't sound like you are looking for that.

2 hour wargames doesn't seem to have FNG on their site anymore. I saw some talk of a Kickstarter for a new version but that doesn't seem to have happened; I'm not sure why the game would vanish.

That is very weird, surprised they're not selling a PDF even (which is what I bought). Wonder if they're going for a 3rd edition.

Goalsystem Delves? It's a skirmish characters vs monster game by the folks who did SuperSystem. It uses a dice pool system (rolling for successes) and can be run with or without a GM. The negative for some folks on this site is that it was originally done as a kickstarter ;)
