Lancaster Host is open again?

I just went to the Historicon web site to look something up for a buddy, and discovered that it's being held right now in the Lancaster Host Convention and Center . . . which sort of implies that the Lancaster Host and Convention Center is open for business again.

Anybody been back since the refurb? I'd be interested to hear how it looks.

I believe there was other pestilence as well, mice for sure, and I think there was a great flood. I can't believe you're disrespecting a place with such clear connections to Scripture.

Just looked---yep, open even while under construction? Still getting miserable reviews on tripadvisor.

Here's a good pic:

I still remember the people on bgg who were mad they were moving from the Host bc the new place in PA was like 30 bucks a night more expensive and a longer drive.

Actually the new place room rates are the same thanks to the BPA subsidizing the diff between the Host and Seven Springs - it’s only like $10 anyways. The real whining is on Facebook and is about lack of fast food nearby so the overall cost is higher, but the Host was a fucking shit hole. Fuck the whiners.

Here is some awesome feedback:

The host, sowing the seeds of anger and bitterness in every toxic nerd community on the east coast. TURN UPON EACH OTHER.

Place is evil. Deserves to implode like the house at the end of Poltergeist. It's the only fitting end to that dump.

That's why I was confused that it's open for Historicon.

The Host only actually closed for about a month AFAIK, two years ago when it was condemned amidst a weekend dance competition weekend.

lancasteronline.com/news/local/lancaster...fb-ffb8c2d14621.html

One of the things that cracks me up is that one comment in the HMGS thread mentioned the bar not having functioning beer taps. They've had that issue for YEARS. How the fuck can a business go that long without fixing what should be a major profit center ?

So Historicon, whose attendees are even cheaper than some of the WBC tightwads and who seem to put a lesser premium on accommodations, booked it for this year after a fruitless search to find something else. They tried Fredericksburg for four years and attendance dropped and people complained about the expenses and travel times from the north.

Its only a one year contract; 2019 they are holding it in downtown Lancaster at the convention center. This was because the Host returned a room rate quote of about $149 per night for 2019, the thought being the renovations will be done and they can get more money for the no doubt opulent accommodations that will emerge from the current chaos . Also, the Host reno when ( and if ) it finishes will reduce the floor space for meetings; I believe the Lampeter room is now partially taken up by the new reception area.

WBC looked at the downtown facility. It has several drawbacks offsetting its obvious geographic similarity to the Host. The attached hotel has less rooms than the Host and is about $20 more per night, so people who want attached lodging will not be happy. So a large percentage of attendees would essentially be commuting from the same hotels that service the Host . Furthermore, parking is both not free as well as not adjacent to the center, so a fair amount of schlepping back and forth is required. One board member said weekday parking in particular is a PITA. And there are bottleneck issues with the elevators servicing the center - not ideal when trying to make a tournament starting time.

I'm surprised they don't look in Harrisburg, which is much more accessible than Lancaster. I went to Historicon at the Penn Harris in about 1989. A lot of highways meet in Harrisburg.

God forbid that you take an extra 30 mins and eat at a local cafe or diner (or gasp, something nicer).

If it’s that big of a deal, pack some sand which making stuff in a cooler. If that’s too much, bring a load of bread and peanut butter. I worry about the survival capability of this country if there was a blip in operations

WBC started at Penn Harris I believe. I think it’s too small now. The web site lists 30,000 sq feet of space, that’s less than half what had at the Host.

And the Yelp reviews are not encouraging.
