Dragon Rampant questions

Somebody or somebodies here mentioned playing this but I can’t find who it was. I’ve got the want to do a classic fantasy mass battle thing with simple rules, low model prep time, and cheap startup. Dragon Rampant looks to suit me.

But I want to do this at either 15mm or 6mm- I don’t want another 28mm painting project and I don’t want to store more 28mm armies.

Has anyone played this rule set at these scales, and what would your recommendations be in terms of board size, scaling, army compositions, etc?

I had a whole mess of stuff to say about these sorts of games: therewillbe.games/blogs-by-members/6553-...ward-street-batrep-7

I've never played at that scale, but all the games I mentioned above (except for OnePageRules) give tips and pointers for playing at smaller scales.

The one thing I failed to mention is that all of the rulesets tend to go for much smaller groups than is typical for say, Warhammer. Armies tend to be less than 50 models per side, which might be unimpressive at 15mm scale.

We played in 28mm when we were doing it. I could've sworn there was some mention of other scales in the rules but I didn't see it when I glanced through them earlier this morning. I even glanced at Lion Rampant. Now that I think of it when we did The Men Who Would Be Kings I think we did 15mm. I'll ask my buddy who ran it if he did made changes.

I’m wanting to play this on a 2x2 or 3x3 table- so the smaller models make more sense I think. I just got the rules so I’m going to see what I can do with them, it looks pretty good.

I don't think that Joan of Arc game ever materialized (it was a huge KS) but that sure looked like a "cheap" way to get a ton of 15mm fantasy figures.

Oh yeah, that...heh.

Another option I am thinking about is the new Middle-Earth box...but that is back up to 28mm. I do like the system though, and the box is a huge value.

I primarily paint/RPG with 15mm so if you need guidance there let me know. Also the Joan of Arc game should be shipping like within the month (I am a backer of that as well) and comes with a whole bunch of generic stuff.

You sold off a lot of your 28mm, right? Dragon Rampart and the other games I discussed all seem designed to be run with old Warhammer-scale models--people looking for stuff to do with their collections after Sigmar came around.

What's nice about Dragon Rampant is that, if you don't have 12 models of something, just make everything two points of health and use 6, or 6 points of health and use 2. In this way, it's great for use with those Northstar Froastgrave Soldier/Undead/Whatever boxes and any DAAS minis you have laying around.

As long as both sides miniatures' are in the same format, there's no issue with scale. You can play single basing, group basing (1 unit = 1 base, with multiple miniatures), multiple group basing (1 unit = several bases, with multiple miniatures). Even cutting the number of minis in half doesn't matter (6 fig for normal unit, 3 for elites/cav).

It's a hit points game so it really is non issue. More about how you'd like your game to look like.

I'd suggest changing the measurement in cm or cut it in half with 2 x 2 table.

Yeah, I really like that versatility,
At first I didn’t understand how that worked but now I think it’s pretty genius. I think what I am going to do is get the Middle-Earth box since I already have plenty of 28mm terrain and use them to play MESB and to see if I like Dragon Rampant enough to play at a smaller scale.

It’s a great box set. There are exactly two guys at my club who play MEFB. I always tell them I’m going to horn in on one of their games one day and they always shrug.

Ha, yeah, it is the little system that could, isn’t it? Back when I had my store, my GW rep flogged LOTR hard. He’d “accidentally” send me LOTR product. I never saw a single person buy or play it in my shop. I never played until that Goblin Town set, and it was really fun.

Also...now I’m sort of looking at the Oathmark models for DR with an eye toward having some things set for when Oathmark drops later this year...it should be good.

Tough choices!
