The black reach set is definitely the way to go to expand on the battleforce (double your boyz, add deffkoptas and an HQ Warboss with a Nob body-guard). It's really tough to finish painting an army once you have like 100 primed guys staring at you accusingly from the shelf, but as soon as you make a dent, and have like 20 guys painted amidst the sea of primed minis you will find hte inspiration to paint more.
Over the past three weeks or so I've painted 35 dark elves and a Bolt Thrower to a three layer of highlights level of detail, and the way I got through it is firstly by painting in front of the tv, and secondly by switching up the units for variety.
That only leaves a Brettonian army, an Imperial Guard army, 3 regiments of Dark Elves and a squad of Grey Knights primed and in need of painting, an Ork army and an Orc army in need of repainting, a Rhino, three squads of Chaos Marines, 3 regiments of Empire troops and 3-4 regiments of Dark Elves that need Priming.

Just picked up Assault on Black Reach and the figures are too cool. I hadn't played since second edition but it looks pretty similiar. The game system never thrilled me but the mythos behind it is awesome. Plus, I can add it to my evergrowing boxes of plastic figures...

I got started by buying the second edition set... One month before third edition came out. Anyway, it's a lot different from second edition, I think for the better. If you can, try out the rule system, it's now in fifth edition. If you don't like it, at least you have a bunch of cool minis, BUT if you do like it, then you have an excuse to buy even more!
