I was looking at getting into one of the Modern mini skirmish games, but I wanted to check to see if any ATers had suggestions for a ruleset. I am mostly looking at the smaller engagements, limited to a few fire teams, but I think that most systems focus on this scale anyways.
I was looking at Ambush Alley, and Dogs of War the other day but I figured I would troll for advice here first. I don't mind a slightly complex system if it still has flavor and plays smoothly, but I don't demand absolute tactical realism.
For minis I was either looking at the Caesar 24mm plastics, or, if I can find em cheap, some of the defunct Battlefield Evolution minis from Mongoose.
I wish I could give you one, but I can't think of any off hand. Modern is very tricky to do because the disparity between different countries arms and the way that wars are fought now. Also all the classified and specialized weapons would be a bit much to try to tackle. Especially all that non-leathal junk that they are coming up with.
I think even Battlefield Evo was set a few years in the future so I don't think it is truely modern...I could be wrong on this one though.
There are a lot of rules posted and you should be able to find what you're looking for. As far as a mass market modern skirmish game the pickings are slim.
If you don't have any luck then one game I'd recommend is Infinity if you'll settle for a sci-fi skirmish rule set. I haven't played the game yet but it is one that has been on my radar a long time and is only a matter of time before I get into it.
If you do find a set that you like though I'd be interested in hearing.
