And now that I think of it, a set of dice for $12 isn't far off what I usually see dice sets going for. And being standard d6s can be used for _any_ game.

FFG's Arkham dice are 5 for $10, minus the carrying pouch. The AH dice aren't engraved or embossed either. Who would have thought that GW would offer a better deal.

I guess board gamers are a much easier screw.

Possibly. GW has to know that all these pieces aren't necessary to play the game so they can't mark them too high. Any d6s/rulers will do.

Here we go again, but it seems like $100 GW Space Hulk has been a better deal than some of the $100 FFG coffin games.

Going back to Barnes' a la carte thought...there are rules to play Warhammer at various point levels. So, if you play with friends and avoid tournaments you could run 500pt games _much_ cheaper. Spend however much you do/don't want. The minis also double for Mordheim, D&D, etc.

I'm glad to see WHFB is getting a new edition. Friends of mine that play a lot had said the system was in need of overhaul. There was also a lot of codex creep that had put some armies way out of whack on the power curve. I also heard some of the fellows that were part of the brain trust responsible for shepherding the WHFB system were in need of euthanasia.

Now put all of that aside and the fact I don't even play WHFB anymore (Way too competitive, stressful, and just not much fun), that Gamer's Edition set in the knapsack looks damn sweet. If I still played I'd be all over that in a heartbeat. For now I'll stick to 40k. And yes when the sweet Apocalypse Set came out in the big Imperial Guard rucksack, I ordered one.

I can hear it already.

THE DICE AREN'T BALANCED!!!

THE DICE AREN'T BALANCED!!!

Seriously though, those dice would be pretty cool for any number of games. The inner conflict is a bother. Barely making my saving throw... UGH.

If I spot those dice in a store, Chaos in the Old World is getting an upgrade.

Bits are great, but whats with that sack-backpack thing? Looks nerd-metrosexual.

If I had money I'd buy that sack. It's dumb stuff like that that really makes me enjoy gaming.

Also, I think there is a whole article in this idea of value in ala carte minis games like WH. It's expensive if you get sucked in (granted that it's super easy to do), but that's only due to a lack of willpower. You can run little battles pretty cheaply, especially when you factor in the secondary market.

Same as Magic, you can get like 5k cards for $20 these days and have hundreds of hours of game play and deck building options, but you won't have the new shiny ultra power rares. Magic just for fun is one of the absolute best values in gaming of all time.

Yeah, going to need those dice for CitOW. The $74 rulebook is kinda lame though. I'd settle for the mini one in the upcoming High Elves/Skaven starter set.

Buy the cool Gamer's Edition, sell the rulebook on eBay and keep all the cool bits, dice and bag for your other gaming needs.

A video like the one shown makes me really miss the days when I played Warhammer, both 40k and Fantasy. Then I remember how much it cost and how much time it took up to paint and glue them together, and I take off the nostalgia goggles which do nothing.

I think Warhammer really is in a class of its own when it comes to components - it really does - it's just that the entry cost is too high for somebody like me to even contemplate getting back into it.

The cost really depends on what it is you're looking for. With WH40k and WHFB, the modeling and painting are part of the entertainment value/fun. If those two aspects don't appeal then odds are these aren't the games for you. Personally I like working on new armies and building them, so the cost of participating in 40k is worth it to me.

That's the thing - I didn't really enjoy the painting and modelling parts of the 40k hobby - and considering how the game to me wasn't that well designed in earlier editions I got trounced by my mate's Tau army every time. My poor Plague Marines - I collected Death Guard because when you're 15 and going through puberty you can relate.

I'm sure Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer are satisfying games and hobbies - I just don't see how I could go back to that after being burned by that game too many times before.
