My 10yo is getting big into WH40K and I'm looking to pick up the basics. A couple of codexes (codices?) is what's on the list right now. Powell's Books and Amazon seem to be running $25-$30 each. Is there an online site for swapping and selling used stuff?

You can find some good deals on eBay from time to time. There's also the marketplace forums of The Miniatures Page.

I agree with Bulwyf. I've had some luck at bartertown as well
