Crazy to think that what I still think of as being a hobby game is the biggest game brand in the US, bigger than Monopoly or Scrabble or whatever. Apparently it's > $200 million, which doesn't mean a whole lot to me as I don't have any figures to compare it to; anyone know any other board game figures?
Also the old news there that the size doubled in the last three years, and that the player base increased by over 80%; I knew that it had seen an explosion of interest starting with the Zendikar expansion, but I had not known the extent.
(hey Uba, can you move this to the CCG forum instead of Ameritrash? Whoops)

Do you think their cross-over into video games has had any connection with the explosion of interest? Duels of the Planeswalkers has been uploaded 500,000 times and it's a casual game that is designed to make you want to go to Friday night magic (which is precisely what another gamer friend of mine and myself both did). I can't imagine the Zendikar expansion actually drawing new players on its own.

Wow. I firmly beleived that MtG was here to stay and would always exist in some form like D&D, but those numbers are amazing. I'm sure it's a combination of factors. The entrance of MtG into the video game market, newbie friendly events like FNM, and not the least of which, the better quality of Magic sets that WotC has been producing. Matter of fact, I plan to go to my FLGS tonight and play in a booster draft.

Comparing revenue numbers likely paints a different picture than number of players. You can get a copy of Monopoly or Scrabble at Walmart for the price of two booster packs. How much do you suppose Magic draws (dollars) from the median purchaser in any given year?
