I have an opportunity to get some starters and boosters for Dreamblade for cheap (5$ per booster and 10 per starter) but as I have not played the game before, I dunno which sets would be the best. Would you recommend to get one starter and some boosters or two starters and a couple of boosters as well? They have Baxar's War, Night Fusion and Chrysotic Plague - I like the transparent figures in the CP expansion but which one would you recommend? I am a complete newbie but the game looks very cool and I would like to try it. Thanks in advance!
I originally went for one starter and then just bought boosters (you get a higher proportion of rares that way, if memory serves). Later I discovered Gale Force Nine selling a vinyl board, so it would be possible to buy that, download the rules, and buy only boosters. Unfortunately a quick search reveals that the vinyl board is now out of print.
I'd get the extra starter. You probably don't care about the rarity, you get two extra figures, and the extra rulebook, map, and dice will come in handy.
As for which expansions: I enjoy the core set and baxar's the most. I think after that point the game experiences a complexity drift which wasn't really needed.
I like all the sets, and didn't even notice a complexity creep. If you don't know anyone else who plays Dreamblade, though, then you should totally get two starters to have more dice and an extra game board. Then get one of each expansion.
If you want to win you should get base set boosters which hold Pearlthorn Castle and Scarab Warcharm. But that being said, the base set minis are quite cool.
Personally I like Baxar's and Anvilborn. They just have cool minis, cool abilities, and I tend to fare well with them when playing draft. Plaque definitely have nice abilities as well, but the Venom and Hive abilities just require you to have a lot of minis from that set in order to work perfectly. For some reason I'm not quite into Night Fusion, but I like the defend ability introduced in that set - basically an ability that is activated when your opponent attacks you.
So to answer you question: go for more base set minis and maybe a Baxar booster or two. And try the damn game - it absolutely rocks.
Thanks guys! I will buy two starters and six boosters. I can't wait to try the game, everyone says it is great but there is not much talking about it anywhere.
One of the problems, I think, is that after some times certain builds tend to be more powerful than others. I haven't played that much, but it seems to me and those I play with that you can hardly build something without Valor.
Also, some of the more interesting builds/abilities require quite a lot of specific minis. On the other hand drafting (for instance three boosters each) is tons of fun.
Yea, I plan to do drafts as I loved them when I was playing M:tG. Is it possible to mix some boosters from the minis I have and then draft from them? I dunno if my opponents will have the time and will to experiment with deck building so I guess draft will by my main way of playing.
Start off with sealed, then do drafting later. Keep the stuff you opened in the boxes they came in, so you can easily do sealed games, swapping boosters sometimes to spice things up a bit. And there's a Dreamblade Sealed Generator somewhere around the net that uses the print runs to generate the sealed stuff, find it and download it if you end up getting a LOT more Dreamblade.
