FAT Twilight Struggle ACTS tournament?

Who is Truly master here?

Would anyone be interested in a Twilight Struggle Tournament?

if so post below

We would use Acts for card and dice tracking. Actual map states would have to be tracked by individuals using either a spreadsheet, physical game copy, or vassal.

If there's just a few folks interested i'll assign random numbers and It'l be a round robin contest, with 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw (you play each opponent once as each side) and the most points win. In the event of a tie the top players play each other again.

If there's more interest, or if folks prefer it, we can do a knockout tournament (would require an even number of players). In the case of a drawn pair of games, vp margin would decide who is eliminated.

p.s. my expectation is that each game would be played over something like a month, so the tournament could take a while.

The Duke & I discussed this after our recent game of Hannibal. But he beat me to the thread, much as I beat him in that game :)

But I'm all for it.

I'm interested, but I can't get to ACTS at work, so it might behoove me (at least early on) to be matched with people in my time zone so we can swap stuff back and forth at roughly the same point in the evening.

Of the baker's dozen games I've played of Twilight Struggle, I have never been defeated (I tied once or twice due to WarGames). In the best kind of cowardly defence of my spotless record, I will not show up for this tournament.

that shouldn't be a problem Nate. You can always just use vassal and pbem it.

Barney you are the mostly lowly of cowards

I have zero experience with Vassel. Someone will have to hold my hand tenderly and guide me through it.

Be gentle.

You can always play me first, Nate -- I am in MO too.

Don't even try to play this game PBEM using VASSAL--it simply won't work. It is among the most heavily customized modules anyone's made yet, and only supports live play.

This is TS not Caylus or Washingtons War. I'm only up to 20 or so TS plays. I'm betting on Matt or Space Ghost.

I'm playing way to many online games right now. AtA, Mr.Mad, WWr and the slowest game of Virgin Queen ever but I guess I'm in.

Only if I never have to play the US. My record on that side is terrible.

I'm also very rusty, having not played in over a year.

If we're playing on ACTS with the deluxe edition cards, everyone will have to agree a house rule for Our Man In Tehran - there's no way in ACTS to handle its effect. I believe the usual consensus is to treat it as +1 VP US.

good point matt.

Its probably worth discussing tournament rules. I initially figured each pair would play both ways, because otherwise you could see a ton of russian wins. The other option is to have players bid for the right to play russia with starting control points.

I believe the bid for sides is part of the official tourney rules in the actual game ruleset, isn't it?

Not exactly.

It used to be the case in the original version. However, the deluxe version is considered by most players to be balanced out of the box, due to the extra cards.

(FWIW I am not one of those players. I still think there's a small USSR advantage due to the fact that it's much harder for the US to recover from bad luck during the early war compared to the USSR)

So if we're using the deluxe cards, we should be good to play one game, sides determined randomly.
