Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Ameritrash Championship: Dune vs. Cosmic Encounter

I've been thinking about it, and have come to terms that I am OK knowing that F:AT is nothing but a bunch of latent Eurogamers.

In order to uphold my honor, I played both CE and Dune this weekend. Fate, determined to make sure I get to enjoy CE as much as possible, allowed me to open my starting hand with the classic Filch flare. Half the deck was mine before the first turn and I won thanks to a perfectly timed theft of 6 reinforcement cards from discard pile, while everyone made sure I wasn't stealing anything. In other words, it was the most possible fun while playing CE (the other players even enjoyed my Filch skills to use this under their nose) and the first time I've personally been dealt that flare.

After a lunch break, we played Dune on a beautiful PnP board with all the fixins. It was a solid game and I (the Fremen) teamed up with the Emperor to get a win one turn before the BG had predicted.

After both games, I can still proudly hold my head up high and confirm my vote for Dune.

We're choosing a themeless abstract as the king of all AT games?.. weird. Or do I mean settingless abstract?

Yeah, this result feels dirty.

I forward the motion that after this we have a 'Fortress:Ameritrash Championship' not beholden to ratings on BGG...or BGG at all for that matter.

We need to see Titan, Talisman, Car Wars, Ogre, TI:3, BattleTech, Warhammer, FoD, AH, DQ, etc. in the line-up.

It depends entirely on what we value in our games. Is theme the only thing that makes a game AT? Or is interaction and chaos just as instrumental? Dune has theme in spades, but in it's structure it's about on the level of Imperial. That is, a Euro.

And I'd hardly call Cosmic Encounter themeless. I actually think it's a lot more theme than it is setting. Space is all about the unexplored, unforeseen consequences and new phenomena. You can explore it, but you can't tame it. THAT is Cosmic Encounter all over.

I agree with this. Not that Dune and Cosmic don't belong in the final, but there were a ton of games that never even made the cut. BGG gravitates towards the more modern stuff, and that was reflected in our bracket. Dune and Cosmic are old games, but they're generally regarded as being ahead of their time, like most EON games.

I love this thread by the way. Debating the relative merits of two awesome games is always fun to me.

Tough choice here. I really like both of these games. But if I went over to a buddy's place with a 12 pack and was given a choice between the two, I know which game I'd jump on.

Dune

I'll give a nod to Cosmic because it's much easier to pull out and play regularly, but that isn't what this is about. If this was a regularity contest, Will Shatner would win with a box of All Bran.

I thought when you were talking about Rex a few weeks ago you said you've never even played Dune! Heretic!

Don't cloud my opinion with the facts!

Seriously though, if we're going to drag process of the game into this I don't see how Dune is any less Euro in structure than Cosmic. It's not as abstract, but both games are awfully streamlined.

Dune.

If there were a Dune expansion for Heroscape, I would pick that instead. A little Sting/Feyd miniature running around would all kinds of awesome.

With less 10 hours to go in the voting we have a fraking tie.

Dune = 25

Cosmic Encounter = 25

The problem is there is no ties Thunderdome. There is no victory point ties in Ameritrash games. There is no shared victory in Ameritrash (crap I forgot both Dune and CE can have shared victory condition).
