Mike says some great things there, it is true that Metal is a combination of many things, we all stand on the shoulders of our ancestors. Beethoven's 5th is a pretty fucking metal riff as is parts of Mozarts Death Requiem... it's old in many ways but more than that. Evil has been a huge part of Blues long before Sabbath came along.. hell Willie Dixon has a song called Evil and of course RJ sang about selling his soul to the Devil, I don't know how much more evil you can get.

As for Nuclear War, has no one heard the Louvin Bros?

... all this in 1952. Every topic that Sabbath has I can find several precedents... several. AC/DC too but they don't pretend otherwise.

If the question was "who is more Metal" Sabbath wins in a landslide. But for who's better? I'm still with AC/DC.

And who's more committed to Satan? Ozzy's still walking around, Dio died at sixty something of stomach cancer. Bon drank himself to death after proclaiming he was on a highway to hell.

It's like David Lee Roth said about Sammy Hagar: "Yeah, Sammy made some good music. But while he was making some good music, DAVID LEE ROTH AND VAN HALEN WERE MAKING HISTORY!" LOL

But really, AC/DC should be compared to a band like Skynard rather than Sabbath if you wanted to compare styles, I think. The only comparison that can be wrought between BS and ACDC is that they both have some reference to hell in their songs.

AC/DC is a fine band, but I'm never excited to hear one of their songs on the radio (except Big Balls and maybe Dirty Deeds). I've heard Sabbath's hits a ton of times, but still turn it up when they come on.

I'm emphatically in favor of AC/DC.

I also caught a snitch once, but it cost me 2 weeks detention...caught him with an uppercut.

Both are great, but nowadays I'm much more likely to listen to AC/DC. When you first heard Sabbath you may have thought it can't get any heavier. This of course has been proven wrong, but beer soaked rock never goes out of style.

This is so true. I put on some Sex Pistols recently and couldn't believe how much it sounded like teen pop. I've heard harder rock on the Disney Channel.

I listen to the radio for about an hour a day during my commute. According to the radio, Black Sabbath have only made two songs worth listening to. This puts them on par with Bush.

By this same measure, AC/DC have made at least three songs worth listening to.

I'd say When the Levee Breaks is better than anything Sabbath recorded - and maybe In the Light too - but I'd still pick Sabbath between the two.

Can't say I'm much of a fan of either Zeppelin or Sabbath but I do have to say that Achilles Last Stand is an amazingly progressive tune. Zeppelin were big time rip off artists and Sabbath were so into the occult stuff it strikes me as a bit silly. I wish they joked a bit more in their songs because it comes off as pretentious high school poetry to me without any self awareness.

I can appreciate both but at the same time they both took themselves too seriously.
