I honestly believe that U2 are massively overrated.

Hmm...I dunno, I think Springsteen absolutely matches up with Bowie. Granted their styles are totally different, but few artist have had the lengthy careers that both have had while remaining somewhat relevant the entire time. Springsteen hasn't reinvented himself every other album, but if that's the criteria then Reed would be a better match for Bowie, but I really don't see any room for debate there.

The Clash are tough because they hit a level of 'cool' that I don't see many voting against them. I felt the same way about 20 years ago, but now I would much rather put on a Ramones album than the Clash. The Sex Pistols are a joke, prefab band. I don't see them beating anyone. Perhaps another 'uber cool' band like The Pogues? I never hear anyone say they don't like The Pogues. If there's no match within punk then go Clash v Beatles? Clash v U2? Clash v Smiths?

Speaking of The Smiths....vs The Cure? Really? Maybe in '83, but since the smoke has cleared I'd say that Cure vs Depeche Mode would be more appropriate. The Smiths are far highly regarded than either of those bands with Morrissey reclaiming relevancy in the 00s. Not too long ago.
