Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Trashdome - Arkham Horror VS Talisman

I don't want to share numbers, but it's worth mentioning in this AH love-fest is that AH is one of the best-selling hobby games ever. Richard told me how many copies have sold once and it blew me away. He told me how much he's made from it in royalties and I couldn't believe it. It's a major, major success and its popularity really does kind of go beyond usual hobby crowd confines.

If you get banned for that we'd all be in trouble. At least Barnes isn't promoting the elegance of Euro's in here like he usually does. I bet if we did Arkham VS Caylus he'd be voting for Caylus.

Vote: Talisman

Never played Arkham Horror. Maybe never will.

That is kind of sad.

Vote: Arkham Horror -- probably the best game that I own.

Yet again, I've played only one of the two choices... and only recently for the first play of that... but I can't imagine Talisman coming close to AH. AH is, as so many have described it over the years, long and big and somewhat complex and fiddly, and also really awesome. I've played about 3 games since the first just in the last couple weeks, and already I'm scouting for what expansion to buy first, much to the chagrin of my time, table space and bank account.

Speaking of which, whaddya all think as far as that goes?? I'm tempted to go ahead and start with Innsmouth, as I really like the idea of the personal story mechanic. Then again, though I understand all of the expansions are essentially modular and can be mixed and matched, it feels weird somehow for me to buy the most recent expansion first, when there were several others that came before that. But I'm looking at getting one big box and one small to start with. Recommendations/suggestions welcome. This will be mostly for solo plays with 3-4 investigators, with the occasional multiplayer game with some local friends when I'm at home.

The best words I can find for this particular situation happen to come from that bastard Mr. Barnes:

"No- it doesn't feature the currently in-vogue mechanics and it's not one of these oh-so-clever minimalist Eurogames where the designer's goal was to abstract everything interesting away to a simple flowchart. But that doesn't make it any less vital, exciting, and fun, then it was when I played it for the first time nearly 20 years ago. What's more significant is that returning to TALISMAN made me realize that a lot of what's missing in games today is a real sense of character, a palpable heart and soul that makes the game truly unique. Even amongst games like TALISMAN inspired games like PROPHECY or FFG's fantasy titles, TALISMAN stands out as something singular in the hobby that has proven over the past 25 years to be a timeless, perennial game that will likely be played and enjoyed long after the faddish games that litter the hobby now are long forgotten."

What more can be said? It was about 20 years ago that I first played Talisman as well, when I was barely in Kindergarten, and in the following two decades, the game hasn't aged a day. What's more, for the few hours it lasts, I feel like I haven't either. Almost every time I play it, I walk away from the table a little high from the excitement, a little sore from so much laughter, and with the grinning faces of my friends and family etching themselves upon my memory, waiting there for some inevitable moment down the road when somebody says "You remember that time we were playing Talisman, and..."

I like AH, but I love Talisman. No other game I've played consistently delivers those great stories and memories the way it does. It made gamers my dad and his friends, who made gamers out of me and my friends. It made a gamer out of the owner of my FLGS, and who knows how many people he's sold it to over the years. Hell, almost everyone I've ever known has played Talisman at least once. It's a classic in every sense of the word.

Vote: Talisman

Also, H.P. Lovecraft was a well-known racist. Therefore, a vote for AH is a vote against civil rights. You all are monsters worse than anything described in all the tomes of the Miskatonic U. So, yeah, think about that.

Talisman - by the measure of how much beer you can drink and still be playing a game more or less correctly.
