Bugs: Recent Topics Paging, Uploading Images & Preview (11 Dec 2020)

Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Trashdome - Diplomacy VS Borderlands

You might know Borderlands as Ascalion. It's quite likely that Klaus Teuber was familiar with Ascalion, since the barter economy in Catan resembles Borderlands'/Ascalion's.

Still, Borderlands ain't no Diplomacy.

Never played either ... was in the 'nearly' PBEM of Borderlands and it looked interesting - well more interesting than Diplomacy did when I looked at it, plus if Matt compares it to Powergrid then my vote has to be ...

Borderlands

(Plus-plus if Mikey Barnes fixes another vote I want to be on the winning side this time.)

What are you talking about? Marvel Heroes DID win! It just wasn't officially recognized.

Shit ! - we're in trouble, Juniper's still pissed from last week's shenanigans.

(At least he voted correctly this time ;-p )

Because it was unrecognizable after the clobbering it took.

Now, somebody kick the old geezer cane out from under DIPLOMACY so we can start the beatdown.

Damn straight!

Barnes just likes Borderlands because it's a Game Z. It's been out of print since, like, the mid '80s. He'd like it even more if it were based on some manga that's never been published outside of Japan, and it had a name like "Most Excellent Magical Railroad Combatlands."

Diplomacy.

Negotiation and timing are everything.

I'd hardly call an unclear vote tally a 'clobbering.' I mean, lets compare that to the Touch of Evil/Last Night on Earth Trashdome. Now THAT was a clobbering.

Seems like people are voting for an idealized concept of what Diplomacy represents, while disregarding the shitty gameplay of the actual game. Let me remind you of the ugly reality to playing Diplomacy:

Early on, the map is filled. Everything has been claimed. From then, it's a whole bunch of staring at the map, talking about the map, making deals about the map, and then a bunch of fiddly writing down of movements. Then a hassle of resolving movements, even though they are often quite predictable and samey for long stretches of the game. Finally, somebody gets backstabbed, and the bitter recriminations begin, then eventually the game settles into another long stalemate, until another backstabbing takes place.

I am personally unable to find the fun in any of that, with the exception of gloating at somebody who has just been backstabbed. I don't like Euros, but I will play just about any Euro rather than endure another game of Diplomacy. Even jury duty or community service is more fun than Diplomacy, and I say that from personal experience. Fuck Diplomacy.

I love diplomacy. In high school we'd kill a whole saturday or sunday with a long game. With the right group of people, you can just shrug off the backstabs and enjoy it. if you get knocked out first, it sucks....but that's part of the fun. make sure there's something else to do or go home. shoot, I helped start a Diplomacy Club at school, we'd play every other weekend or so. I'd play now, except that I have difficulty getting anything on the table at all.

Borderlands, sounds interesting but I don't know much about it.

Vote: Diplomacy

Never played Diplomacy, if I manage to gather 6 ppl, we play Dune. Borderlands is quite a good game which would profit from graphic overhaul.

Played Diplomacy once, disliked it. Played Borderlands once, liked it. Both have influenced game design and that's the basis on which I'm voting. Clearly Diplomacy has influenced the hobby more. Tamburlaine stated that very eloquently so just go back and reread his post.
So, call me perverse, but I'm voting for a game I dislike: Diplomacy.

Dammit, we're supposed to vote for the better game, not the better placeholder in gaming history.

Today, I'm using "better" in the "most influential" sense.

The Perverse Loonies have come out .... and will soon be having their F:AT ticket shredded.

What a disgraceful act - voting for a game you hate, we may as well just declare Pillars of the Earth the overall winner and close the Dome to save any more embarrassment for it.
