Recent Topics paging, uploading images and preview bugs require a patch which has not yet been released.

× WELCOME TO TRASHDOME!

This is part of a series of bloody matches to the death. Show support for your favorite game so it will do better in the fight. You can support it by writing why you think its the better game and more importantly by betting (i.e. voting for) it. Please make it clear for when I check the bets later. You have until Friday when I tally the bets and declare the winner. I will reserve my bet for any tie-breakers.

Although you should be familiar with both games, there is no rule that says you have to have played both of them. The only rule in Trashdome is this;

Two games enter! One game leaves!

Trashdome - History of the World VS Britannia

ugh, i hate both. Brittania is cool cuz we pass around a powdered wig to whoever is the Bretwaldah (sp?) and give them a large pencil or pen as a sceptre. It makes the game hilarious. The rest is too long.

Both games are just way too long I think.

I abstain from voting

Vote: History of the World

I've played Brittania once and the China-themed one once. Very, very annoying system. I've heard folks say that you have to play it a lot for it to blossom, but our group doesn't stay on one game/system for long.

HotW was the first modern board game I owned. In grad school, we used to play it 2p(three colors each), one beer per epoch. Good times...

vote: History of the World

The theme and overall narrative of the game are simply epic. It's similar to RISK in complexity, but plays at a much more leisurely pace. The biggest gripe people about the game is that the downtime between player turns can be nearly as epic as the theme, and that is absolutely true, but this is not the kind of game you pull out at a local game gathering with strangers. I wouldn't even pull it out at a game con or similar. This is the kind of game you pull out with friends you enjoy hanging out with; you can shoot the breeze , eat pizza, trash talk at each other in foreign accents, and yell at the dice, your armies, or your friends when something exciting happens. It's that kind of game. Then penultimate "beer & pretzels" game. Even more casual than RISK, but with some real narrative and theme.

In it's own special way, it rocks.

Vote: History of the World.

Britannia's designer is too obnoxious for me.

I'll go for Britannia, as I haven't played the other one, but they both look pretty interesting and long. I'd say perhaps more research went into Britannia than HotW.

VOTE: Britannia

I own the original edition of Britania and I never play it. I'm just not interested in that game. I was, once, it sees like long ago now. Mind you I never played the re-release so I don't know how much better that makes it. However I would love to try History of the World so that's my vote:

History of the World.

Can someone talk about it a bunch I'd love to hear some shilling for this.

I've only played the re-release of Britannia, and just the once. I managed to win it playing the Romans against slightly more experienced opponents but was left neutral over it and probably would only play it again if it was the only thing on the table - so at least I wouldn't walk away from it. But that's not quite enough to pick it by default over HotW (which has minis in it - I think).

So I will be a big fat wuss and not throw rocks at the loser .... unless there is some really good spin and a bit of ultra-V.

Britannia is a suitable stand-in for Maharajah, and shall receive my vote.

Wow, this is like the old timers' charity bout!

Both are good games, but both are VERY old timey in not very good ways. I'm voting HotW because I like the more epic, all-encompassing scope of it, but BRITANNIA is probably the better game all things considered. And the spin-off games are mostly pretty good since it's a decent system for a multiplayer war game of that class.

I dunno, HotW just has more life in it that BRITANNIA. There's something very stodgy and deadpan about BRITANNIA. And yeah, the designer is pretty much an internet jerk.

I used to love that Windows HotW...I got it for like a dollar at an Electronics Boutique many years ago. It was a fun, quick way to play the game

I was actually introduced to both of these at the same time, at one of the last Avaloncons. we played alot of HotW, mostly because of the smaller playtime..but britannia has always been one that I enjoy playing more

I haven't played either, but both have been on my radar to some extent. I do have a question though...I've heard a few comments here and there that History of the World plays similar to Vinci/Small World but on a larger scale/timeframe...How accurate is that?

Played both, enjoyed both, no preference.
Guess I'd better roll a die before Friday...
