I was bored yesterday AM, and I was cleaning the garage up after a huge remodeling project. So, I see this leftover plank, about 36"x30"x1", and think to myself...what the hell should I do with that?

So, I did something.

Attachment HomegrownPainter.jpg not found

I made a painting booth so that when I head to my buddy's house for a paint therapy session (he's undergoing radiation therapy) I don't have to lug a 100 pound tote of paints. Now I just keep the basics, some brushes, and I'm all set.

All made from leftover parts; the big plank, three pieces of leftover laminate flooring (a bitch to cut a hole in with a cheap hole saw...I had to sharpen the teeth thrice...ugh), and some sheetrock screws I had lying around.

I don't want to hear shit about the craft paint, either. I'll take the Pepsi Challenge against any of you louts, and I'll hold my own. :)

Reaper HD > Mantic Warpaints > Citadel Paints > Apple Barrel Colors

I am not a big fan of either Citadel or Apple Barrel as they are both way too thick. At least Citadel takes thinning fairly well while Apple Barrel tends to go nearly transparent. I'm addicted to the Reaper paints, as well as the more affordable Mantic Warpaints.

I do wonder what the best craft store paints are. Apple Barrel might be the best, but I have had some other brands that are total crap.

Apple Barrel is OK, but the problem is that the pigment to medium ratio is too low. SO, you either have to set it out for a bit to evaporate and then have a 10 minute window to use them, or you continually thin them.

Folk Art and DeltaCeramCoat are both high in pigment and don't thicken too fast. In any event, I generally use a wet palette and drying is never a problem, so any craft paint will do, although Apple Barrel is the thinnest. I generally only use it on miniatures I've primed white.

Citadel bottles are designed by crack addicted monkeys, and Reaper tends to thicken up too much on some colors, or worse, the nozzle gets clogged and you end up deforming the hole, which complicates things next time you want to use them.

The best paints for the buck are Coat d'Arms, IMO. Great bottles, great pigment, and they're the same paint Citadel used before they started making their own.

I use Citadels. I never liked the way that craft paint moved. Can't argue with Pete's results, though.

But that's only because, as Michael was quick to point out, I'm a pimp. ;)

Try Coat d'Arms. Scale Creep up by you stocks them. They're better than Citadel, but have the EXACT same colors.

Their shader fucking ROCKS for doing "dirty" if you like the "Dip" effect. It's easily as good as Army Painter shader and 1/10th the price. Or you can buy some Future Floor Wax w/ Acrylic, put some color in it, and make your own. YMMV.

Here's the Cd'A -> Citadel conversion chart. Same EXACT color, but 1/2 the price and a bottle design that makes sense.

Craft Paint in USA & Europe <> Craft Paint in Indonesia.

Total shit.

I'm using Army Painter Warpaints because they have minimal amount of shades. I don't need 16 shades of brown or whatever. And I paint in cartoony colors.

My first (and only) paint attempt was doing race cars with Army Painter. I thought it worked fine.

Nice work Pete.

Why have you painted a turd purple?

BTW, that lamp with a big mag glass. I want to buy one when I come to USA this summer for painting projects here. Where would be the best place to get one? Preferable mail order, pref sent to my hotel.

I have some bottles of Vallejo. The Game Color is not as good as the Model Color in term of coverage. But it does have bright colors. On the other hand, the Model Color, IMO, is easier to rub off, and the colors are muted.

Are we talking about the same Army Painter?

Techni-tool.com

look up LUXO CFM for the best-in-class or Daylight magnifying lamp for a cheap-but-good. I've probably sold 750,000$ in those things in 10 years at my old job. The one I have I got from a distributor for 'sample'.
