Wanna read my rules?

Wanna read my rules? was created by mads b.
I'm finishing the rulebook for a board game I'm making for one of Denmark's biggest conventions. And since rules writing is a bitch, I'd love to get some help from you guys. So if you want to give them a read through, any comments will be highly appreciated.

They don't have fancy layout and lots of examples (maybe it will be added later), so right now it's mostly about the text. Are they easy to read? Do they explain the game? Would you feel confident playing the game after a single read through? Do you spot any inconsistensies? and so on.

Also, they haven't been proofed, so don't mind the spelling/grammar.

Oh, yeah, it's a Chtulhu game. But at least no zombies or pirates.

Too many words. You need to tighten tighten tighten. Maybe switch to columns to make it more palatable if you can't shrink that content. You have tons of examples embedded in your rules--take them out or set them off somehow.

Example: 6.0's first entry could be:
Contested: A space is contested only if one or more action dice show an explosion on the space.

Apply this brevity throughout, THEN add clarifications, examples, nuances, &c.

Just starting, but I wanted to mention that you don't instruct me to place the board in the middle of the table. You tell me to put the deck of cards around it, but improper board placement could hinder this.

Just where is the board supposed to go Mr. Brynum?

I'll make you a deal. We can trade. I'll read your rules, you read mine. I've made some changes so there may be some inconsistencies from prior versions that I've missed but they are pretty solid overall.

update: If it wasn't clear, I would be more than happy to hear as many people's opinions on these rules as possible. My game has been tested quite a lot; the rules, not at all. Thanks!

Okay, I read your rules. Your game sounds interesting, and I'd like to play it!

One thing that is probably clear when you can see all the components... you mention that player factions only differ in monsters, but the rulebook itself doesn't explain what that means.

At one point you talk about plot points or something, and I think you meant victory points.

I know you said don't worry about spelling, but in this case I want to point out that it's "Miskatonic", not "Miscatonic". :)

I actually considered telling people since it's in every fucking rulebook. But then I decided that even though we're all idiots, we should be able to place a game board on a table without fucking it up.

And thanks for the comments, everybody. Columns, of course. You're not the first to say this, Jeb, I simply forgot when I made the last edit. And of course Miskatonic is with a k - at least I got it right on the game board which will (I hope) soon ship from The Game Crafter.

Looking at rules for City of Lycans very soon.

By the way. If anybody wants to play it, I have a print and play copy ready. A bit of assembly is required, and you'll also have to use a reference sheet rather than custom dice, but it works fine. Let me know if you want the files.

Mads,

I have some suggestions, but it would be easiest if I could write directly on the document. Do you have a pdf or word document you'd be willing to send to me (since you have my e-mail)?

One thing I noticed was some confusing and drifting terminology. "Sinister Plots" represent public objectives, but you later just refer to these as just "plots", which could be a little confusing. If possible, I suggest changing the name of "Secret Plots" to something like "Schemes" to differentiate it from public objectives.

I can give more thorough notes later if you'd like. That one just caught my attention.
