Painting minis is a little like paint by numbers, but it requires a lot more technique. It's less an expression of creativity, and more one of expertise. I don't think that's a bad thing.
I've finished painting Space Hulk and Silver Tower. I'm currently painting my Talisman minis, which is kind of a long irritating task I've set for myself. It's definitely highlighting some of the shoddy sculpts FFG uses.
Ha! I actually enjoyed painting Talisman minis back then. Yep, shoddy minis with vague details, which makes me appreciate the "over detailed" plastic minis. However, it was fun since they're a collection of eclectic characters, which is a break from painting armies for me. I used whatever technique that crossed my mind at the moment. For example, there was a guy with pale green shirt. I just grossly drybrushed white over a black primed figure, and then glaze with green. It was quite liberating.
However, I only own the base game and Reaper, so it's not *that* daunting.
