It's interesting that there was little activity in this thread in recent years. The first year of the pandemic would have been an ideal time to paint minis. And yet my Space Hulk 3rd edition minis remain partially painted, as they have been since 2009. I think that I was probably depressed during that year, because I was doing plenty of solitaire gaming, but couldn't muster the energy to start any serious projects, like painting minis or cleaning up my basement storage room.

I doubt that I'll have the Chaos Spawn done on time, but I'm hoping I'll be able to finish the rest. I've made about every mistake that it's possible to make and they've still turned out alright. Nurgle bless!

A little more Nurgle's Rot and these pretties are ready to be sealed.
Next up are Sloppity Bilepiper to lead this Tallyband and an Icebrow Hunter to lead my girlfriend's Ogor hunting pack, and bam! Two fully-painted warbands where before there had been none.

On the docket are a base of nurglings and one more plaguebearer (I made an oops in list construction), then it's Ogor Hour.

About how many layers are you using here?

Base colour, wash, base again, medium highlight, final highlight. So four "paints" in total, but applied over 5 layers, I guess?Virabhadra wrote: About how many layers are you using here?
The eyes were a descent into madness and folly. So much mixing and layering... Best not to talk of them.

Looks like a lot more work than that! One thing I'm learning about this part of the hobby is that while there's really no ceiling to one's skill as a painter, the floor for a good-looking miniature is surprisingly low.
I'm still figuring out how to highlight curved and rounded surfaces - the inexact nature of it drives my left brain insane. I never finished painting a 40k miniature, but I long for all those right angles...

The horns were far and away the toughest part, washed with contrast and then highlighted front and back with Thunderhawk Blue. I did a sorta messy job but it's a subtle effect, so I think it looks fine.
I plan to read up on the right way to photograph miniatures over the weekend. There are four simultaneous light sources in the back room - natural daylight through the windows, a flourescent Ottlite, a soft white bulb overhead and a clear bulb in a desk lamp. If I'm standing there trying to photograph a mini and I spin around 180 degrees to catch the light from a different angle, the color tones look totally different on my phone camera.

I'm happy with the color matching! I opted for the 80's cartoon version's red eyes, though.

About finished with the "extra" Plaguebearers, a standard carrier and the unit leader. I wouldn't jump to paint another unit of 10, but I'm comfortable now with the way I've been doing them. One lesson learned is to apply the sickly Nurgle's Rot and Blood for the Blood God AFTER I seal the paint job. I use a matte sealant to take down the shine of my shade paints and it dulls the slimy bits too much. On the fence about whether I want to go back and hit the slime with 'Ardcoat on my first batch of models, though. It seems messy.
