static grass

static grass was created by Hatchling
I picked up some "static grass" for the bases of my Talisman R4e figures. Can anyone give me a quick low down on how to glue the stuff? Is it as easy as dilute glue a bit, spread it on the base, and drop some of the grass on it? Do you need to create static somehow for the grass to look normal? Thanks for any tips.

I've never used the static grass (I usually go for the giant tubs of model-railroad flcok). I haven't heard of anything else that needs to be done, I think the "static" is there to push the hairs apart to give it a more realistic look.

All I do when I'm flocking is:
-Glob a drop or two of Elmer's glue onto the base; spread it around with the brush to give it a nice coat; push and wiggle the model into the flock until it is for the most part covered, flick grass up to cover the entire base a 1/4" or so; pull the model up; knock, flick or tap (whatever your preference is) the model a bit to remove the excess; let dry.

It just glues on. But DO NOT use is as an overall base covering - it looks ridiculous. Static grass is best used for small patches on a base largely covered with something else.

The most common thing to do is to paint some diluted PVA on the base and dip it in course-grain sand. Then paint the sand dark brown, and drybrush in pale brown (you can shade it with a wash too if you want, but that's not usually necessary). The paint on a small patch or two of diluted PVA, dip in the static grass and shake off. You can see the effect in the attached image.

You don't have to use sand though. I did a bunch of snow bases once with patches of static grass in gaps in the snow which looked great. You might even get away with an overall layer of "flat" grass with patches of static grass.

Are those Flintloque figures? There have been some huge lots going dirt cheap on Ebay for that game but I've not tried it.

Is "flat" grass different stuff, or just flattened static grass?

Thanks for the tips!

No, they're Imperial Handgunners from the 6th edition of Warhammer Fantasy Battle box set. Dreadful sculpts but very cheap on Ebay. Glad you like the paint job.

It's different stuff, what LordVonTush referred too as "flock". It's much smaller, more like the consistency of sand and comes in a variety of colours and finishes. It's used a lot in railway modelling and you can find it in shops that sell that kind of stuff. I'm not sure it works very well in 25/28mm miniatures - might look okay on 15mm.
