Laminator was created by Schweig!
I need to laminate my Gunslinger cards, and am looking to buy an inexpensive but decent laminating machine.

Any recommendations?

The US Amazon was clearing out the Scotch TL901 before the holiday for like $15, I think it's now up to something in the 20s. For the small amount we've used it so far, it does a fine job and is flexible on the pouches it uses. I would have been bummed to pay full retail of $80 something for it though.

I also got the Scotch TL901 when it was on sale. I haven't done a lot of laminating, but what I have done, mostly just player aids, has turned out fine for my purposes. It takes a while to warm up and is a bit slow, but I have only needed to do a couple of pages at a time, so that hasn't bothered me.

anyone used a Xyron machine? my wife has one she uses for scrapbooking. I received Mare Nostrum with the universalhead rules summaries and the guy had "laminated" them with a Xyron machine and it is freaking nice.

I bought a GBC Heatseal H425 for a quarter it's usual price from an ebay shop that specialises in clearance and returned stock. Mine was an unused display model, I'd avoid ex-demo ones just in case. Seach ebay.de under the Büro & Schreibwaren category for "Laminiermaschine":-
buero.shop.ebay.de/i.html?_nkw=Laminierm...=p3286.c0.m270.l1313
At the moment there's a couple of GBC H75 ones for €49.99; they're A3 ones and not really cheap, so probably brand new and near RRP.

Also, a bit off topic, a question for those of you who've used a heat laminator for cards. Do you leave an edge around them or cut to the edge of the card itself? If the latter how has the deck stood up to long term shuffling? Thanks.

I bought an A4 laminator from ASDA (Wallmart) in the UK for £10 and it hasn't let me down yet, I've done dozens and dozens of player aids (thank you Universal Head) in the last year or two. Basically I don't think cost is an issue for simple stuff.

I've never done it myself, but Francie had a bunch done on a professional machine at Staples. (She precut the cards and they did several per very large sheet, it was actually rather inexpensive, under $5 for around 30 cards). After laminating, they cut the cards out with an edge of laminate around them, and they have held up fine.

uba: I'm wondering whether they hold up equally well without an edge around the cards.

Oh, sorry. You need the edge with heat laminate, because you are essentially just sealing a piece of paper in a pouch. The laminate isn't actually adhering to the surface of the paper, it's just fusing to itself around the edges. It may initially feel like it's stuck to the surface of the paper, but typically that bond isn't very strong. Usually it's just stuck to the ink on the paper. The seal around the edges is what keeps it all together. Cut off the edges and it will eventually fall apart.

You don't need edges with adhesive laminate, because the laminate actually adheres to the surface of the paper. The Xyron that was mentioned earlier is an adhesive laminator.

The xyron stuff looks great though because the plastic is thinner. It is wonderful for doing cards.

Thanks uba, so far I've done mainly play aids, but some games have cards of really odd sizes, so I was wondering what the best approach is. If heat laminators don't fuse strongly to card/ink then I'll have to leave edges. (I tried finding out on TOS a year or two ago, but with all the contradictions, I gave up trying to find any worthwhile information.)
