Re: What BOARD GAME(s) have you been playing?

Lord of the Rings (Knizia) - I'll post more about it in the other thread, but all three of us playing totally fucking loved this.
Out of curiosity, where would that "other thread" be? I enjoyed your comments and would enjoy reading more.

Pax Porfiriana has Eklund describe Atlas Shrugged as one of the best novels ever written, what did you expect? =Pcraniac wrote: Every time I read the Sierra Madre games Facebook page, he is frothing off on race or global climate change in ways that are getting a little uncomfortable.

Yep. He has VERY (crazy person) extreme views. Sierra Madre always tests my "artist vs. the art" feelings.

Egg Shen wrote: Word of Warcraft: The Adventure Game - This game got a really bad rap back when it came out which is a damn shame. The game is a nice mixture of Runebound and Talisman and it makes for a compelling stew. The game suffers for using shitty CG artwork on all of the enemies, but I suppose that was necessary for the license. The game is fun because the point is to complete quests and not just level up. So you always have something to do AND a sense of urgency. Another great aspect is that the game doesn't shy away from PvP action. The discover tokens offer ways to screw with players and many quests encourage fighting. In our game the Orc Warrior dominated. He is a very strong character and will advance quickly if you're not careful. I really like playing this one and I was glad my friends wanted to dive in. Fans of fantasy adventure games should track this down.
It's a good one. I remember there was some BS about only rolling a single attack per turn - i.e. as in every other game of this ilk except for Runebound - it might have been Ken or perhaps Runebound apologist Mr. Skeletor.
I like the fact every loot is usable by anyone. Can't wear this armour? Don't worry, what you thought were metallic vestments is in reality a potion!
The orc warrior doesn't have any difficulty winning this game, it's happened whenever he makes an appearance in our games.

No wonder his rules read the way they do.

Atlas Shrugged is a great novel. Doesn't matter if you agree with it's viewpoint. Of course, I'm willing to bet the scoffers have never actually read it.
Regardless, Pax Porfiriana is a great game and while the rule pamphlet sucks, the game us not that difficult to learn.

Who is John Galt? The answer, by the time you reach the end of the book of course is, we are.
I never agreed with her simplistic libertarian philosophy, but as a teenager its glorification of individual human potential and reason, at least for me, was inspiring. Atlas Shrugged is a great novel. I read it when I was 17 and it's stayed with me. And Pax is a great game.

It's just a shame that her Objectivism philosophy turned into a cult of Ayn Rand where dissent was punished.
Still, very influential ideas extending to politics, art and even Crowley.

Dany is a great character though.

I'm going to agree here! Atlas Shrugged presents great ideas, but, it isn't a great novel. It's too long. It's repetitive. It's too wordy. It has shallow character development. Frankly, it needed editing. I prefer Ayn Rand's much tighter novel Anthem much better. Whatever one's feelings about Objectivism, Any Rand's works do show the importance of individualism and the necessity of its defense against the pervasive tyranny of collectivism.
