So many people in nerd culture love having shelves and shelves full of statues/figures like that (see also collectors editions of video games etc) and I don't get the appeal at all.

I get the appeal if you're actually painting said figures, speaking from years of having played GW's games. And I can see the appeal of having a ton of niche figures like Funko Pops, if you're a collector. Everybody's gotta have a hobby.

Just received a note about the new title from Sirlin Games, Puzzle Strike 2:

I'm excited to announce my next tabletop game: Puzzle Strike 2. In this game, you'll try to arrange physical, cool-looking gems in the right order to "crash" them to opponents and fill your super meters to do powerful super moves.

This is a completely new game (not a "new edition" of an old game!) that's built on crazy comebacks. And this time, the production values are cranked up!

As a fan of ours, we want you to follow our pre-launch Kickstarter page. Clicking "Notify me on launch" on the Kickstarter page will help ensure we have the strongest launch possible. When the time comes, we‘ll need your help to reach our funding goal within the first 48 hours. That momentum will then help us fund the several expensive custom molds that our special gems need.

I have too many conflicting thoughts about the project to pledge outright, even though Yomi and Puzzle Strike are two of our all-time favorites. I'm not on Sirlin's Patreon, so I don't know how much of the development process he has shared, and I'm keen on learning how this is not a new edition of Puzzle Strike.

Also, Yomi's over ten years old. If they re-did any of the art assets, this would have been a great opportunity to fix some of the pornier illustrations in the original. From the looks of Valerie's tits hanging out on the KS image, I don't think that was a consideration.

I’m sure Sirlin has 2,000 words ready to explain why you’re wrong and how this is the right way to illustrate Valerie.

In this day and age that illustration is pretty cringeworthy.

One of my favorite game series is Borderlands, and Monster Fight Club just launched a Borderlands board game. www.kickstarter.com/projects/monsterfigh...adassery/description

It centers on Mr. Torgue's arena battles, and the mechanics seem to be an extension of the ones that debuted in Cyberpunk Red. I think that was what it was called. This game is cooperative, and I have read the rules and they seem pretty cool.

I'm not super thrilled about the hex tiles. I am not yet convinced that they couldn't achieve the same effect with larger tiles, saving a lot of headaches setting up missions. But, for now, I'm in.

I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, so I put them side-by-side. Left is from the KS; right is on the game's BGG page.

Warning: Spoiler!

Come the fuck on.

It is just fascinating to me how wide the gulf is between Sirlin’s skill at game design and development, vs. his skill at marketing, market analysis, branding, and basically everything else related to getting games out into the wild.

Like who TF names a game that is a completely new game “Puzzle Strike 2”? You could call it Gem Crashers, Puzzle Crash, Scepter Crash, Gem Fighters, or a million other things that would prevent you from having to waste valuable time and energy explaining how a game with a “2” in its title is not a rework of your old game.

Don’t forget that the original had three editions. We should really be calling this Puzzle Fighter 2 1e, so no scrubs get it confused with Puzzle Fighter 1 3e.

To answer your question, maybe Sirlin isn’t changing the name because he vastly overestimates the brand recognition of Puzzle Fighter? Seems like a missed opportunity to port the setting to something more recognizable than a niche spin-off video game released in the mid ‘90’s.

You’re probably right. I’m one of the suckers who got the original wood PS, so don’t listen to me though.

Sirlin: “I know! Let’s release it on laser-etched wood!”

Literally everyone: “That is a terrible idea; please consider that there’s a reason that every other game company has never done that.”

Sirlin: “That just proves my genius ability to think outside the box.”

Ugh, I had that stupid MDF version at one point too. I recall being pretty miffed at the time because they delivered the "Special Edition" and right away announced that the upcoming Shadows set and errata would be cardboard-only. A copy popped up in Noble Knight's 'Rare and Unusual' collection recently and I laughed.

I need to buy a table lamp because my kitchen lighting sucks. I came up with I want a dice tower table lamp. A dice tower already has the footprint of a lamp and more light is generally good for games. Someone get on this and I will back for 1.
