You keep saying Uber and Lyft don't provide insurance. I was under the impression that they do provide commercial insurance for their drivers. See www.uber.com/us/en/drive/insurance/ and help.lyft.com/hc/e/articles/115013080548...le-driving-with-Lyft . It doesn't appear to be great insurance, but it is provided. There's plenty to criticize about Uber/Lyft, but the fact is they are (somewhat) successful because they provide a much, much better experience than taxis. For me, cost is a secondary factor, and pretty far down the list.

A friend of mine used to work for Uber (actually, she was a 1099 sub-contractor, just like almost everybody else there) as a recruiter. She would hang out at gas stations and try to recruit drivers while people were getting gas. She said that Uber had to do more recruiting in the spring time, after existing drivers would do their taxes and figure out how much they really earned, then quit.

When I was a little kid, my father worked as a cab driver for a few years. It was a steady job with a steady paycheck to support his family. He wouldn't have been able to do that working for Uber/Lyft. They put people like him out of work for gig economy bullshit. Great that college kids can make beer money for the weekend or whatever but most people need actual jobs.

Newsflash: Cory Doctorow hates Uber. Has been for years.

On topic: just saw a very interesting game today: Stationfall .

It won't make me use Kickstarter, but it might be worth checking out for some people here ( Space-Biff loved it ).

So first of all, thank you GV for the link to their liability insurance. That's a change that I was unaware of, especially if it's primary.

But secondly, I actually looked to using Lyft this morning to pick up my car at the shop, which is about four miles away. 33 frikkin' dollars! I just checked right now at 11am and I'm watching the price change from minute to minute between $16 and $47. And that's for the Wait and Save option. So it isn't the cheapest way to travel anymore.

How are there multiple CCGs on Kickstarter that, with no IP attached and nary a BGG entry, are pushing $1,000,000? I mean, who is the market for that? I am genuinely curious.

Mate, every person in the world has their own likes - I say the same thing about Warhammer but that seems to have done reasonably well in the last thirty years.
There are hundreds of millions of consumers in the countries that usually back board/card games on kickstarter (check the Communities tab to see the countries) and I'm sure with massive genres like TCG/CCG there will easily be enough people to back them for $50 - $100. You should be more surprised about the number of large tabletop projects costing multi-hundreds of dollars being massively supported - but the same argument still applies.
And no different to me asking how the hell do phone manufacturers get millions and millions of people to upgrade their exceptionally good phone for a new model with two extra features  .

I can guarantee this is all collector and investor driven rather than by players. The value of collectible games like Magic, Pokémon and Harry Potter all exploded at the beginning of the pandemic. Not a surprise, perhaps as these are all well established or have an enormous IP behind them.

More surprisingly, though, a brand new CCG, Flesh and Blood, released at the same time and soon started trading $5000 sealed boxes. Investors that were priced out of the blue chip games were now looking for the new Magic. MetaZoo continued the trend and now we have these latest releases. You can see the play for collectors with ‘Day Zero’ print runs and promises for detailed reports on physical printings.

It's like DarthJojo says, it's all speculation. A lot of people made money when Magic jumped in price and some don't want to miss the "next" train. Hence, Flesh and Blood, then MetaZoo and so on.

Yes, everything you love now has some kind of pyramid scheme attached to it. It's the fashion of the year.

The second game clearly states it’s designed for extreme collectability.

“Extreme collectibility” has me picturing Randy Savage advocating buying ccgs now.
