Trying to think of House Rules we have in play now. Try to guess the games. From my youth, we had things like "Fines go to Free Parking" which was terrible in hindsight, and "Soviets can't attack first turn" which was absolutely required.
  • Two monsters on the first gate, you don't have to go into a gate unless it opens on you.
  • Robber can turn off ports.
  • Purple buildings are banned.
  • That plant Corp is banned.
  • Sivan can't be the Kit.
  • First blood, queen breaks hearts.

There is a fun thread idea. List just home rules and see who can guess the game :)

I got my daughter the rainbow unicorn varient of HABAs Animal on Animal. The game is what it is, stacking things up and knocking them over with the silver wrecking cube provided...hang on, that's a die and there are rules to this game???

But it was a Barnes (no relation) and Noble exclusive. I've seen quite I few of these type things in the ever increasing non book sections of these stores. I wonder when they will transition into a straight up toysrus type store or if they will buy/be bought by a game company to direct sell their products.

We had a couple that applied to the guy running a particular game --

1. No oozes, jellies, slimes, or puddings.
2. No killing the horses.
3. One kraken per voyage.

Two monsters in a gate must be Arkham Horror.

The robber turning off the port is Catan.

Free parking is obviously monopoly.

Soviets can't attack first is Axis and Allies.
Not sure about the others though.


I'm not sure if this is a house rule or just a pre-game decision that you must make, but "all money is hidden from other players so they can't count out how many spaces you can buy or how high you can bid in phase 1 OR all money is known by all so the math nerds will win and they can tell you where you can and can't go before you even get to move" :p

Again, I don't recall if it is a real rule or not, but we always could add ronin into a battle once battle was declared, which usually led to a massive ronin arms race!

Purple Buildings sounds like Puerto Rico or San Juan.

Great job, everyone!
  • The first is indeed ARKHAM HORROR. We have a bunch more, but these are probably the most important ones. Gotta get things rolling and gates are not the same size as a Train Station. You can avoid them.
  • Robber turning off Ports should be in the rules of CATAN.
  • We indeed ban purple buildings in MACHI KORO. Not for kids though, so much as my spouse, as she really hates folks messing with her stuff. The kids love the purple buildings. I'm ecumenical.
  • Fuck that plant corp in TERRAFORMING MARS, it's an auto-win.
  • My eldest can't be the Kit alien in SIDERAL CONFLUENCE because she just romps. We don't know how to make fair trades with her, or we do and she wheedles us into bad deals and kills us. We need her to be someone else.
  • If you don't play first blood, queen breaks hearts, are you even really playing HEARTS?
  • Soviets can't attack turn 1 in AXIS & ALLIES was actually added to the rulebook I think. Not sure how this was missed in development.
  • Fines go to Free Parking is so bad for MONOPOLY. There is one "salary space" per trip for a reason. Don't mess with this, it makes the game take forever.

We also level up at 5 trophies in TALISMAN! And back in college, Chaos Warrior was banned for power reasons.

Here's a couple more:
  • Always play with Dog and Friday.
  • Three-letter-words are banned.

We had a whole page of carefully hand-written house rules for Talisman 2nd Ed. All our friends who owned the game had the same. We all signed them like a contract, and each of us kept a copy in our game box. When we played with new people, they had to sign the agreement.

Nearly all the issues our house rules addressed were fixed in the 4th edition, either with rule changes/clarifications or changed/corrected text on cards, so we no longer make people sign an agreement before they play.

I think in 2e you couldn't use psychic enemies as trophies to level up your craft. Am I remembering that correctly? If so, we definitely house rule that. I know in later editions you can do that.
