Pursuit of Glory tonight. We only got to two turns, but that was enough hint of things to come: Turks firmly in control of Egypt, Russians and Indians in the Caucasus and Iraq suffering setbacks trying too hard to make the Turk worry about his rear.

Luckily my opponent handed me a copy of the game as a birthday present which made up for the drubbing.


Also our hotel rooms for Essen have been booked.

Played Glory to Rome last night. Still a wonderful game (even though I lost - and had to stop Legionnairing the guy next to me as he was getting snotty.)

First game I've played where the deck was exhausted too.

Also played Opus-Dei. Very much an audience dependent game as it helps if you can at least sing Monty Python's "The Philosopher's Song". I sent L Ron Hubbard into Steve's world, only for him to come right back to me. After that point, all I wanted was money and Hollywood success...

Played Lineage II and Snow Tails tonight. Basically, the experience was what I imagine it'd be like if you picked up a smokin' hot woman in a bar, took her home, then woke up hours later to find your kidneys have been stolen.

Lineage II kicks ass. I'm not sure I'd recommend it quite as highly as Barnes does, but it's still one of the best games I've played in a long time. Most of my group said the same thing. It can drag a bit, and it's totally possible to get shut out of winning within the first few turns, but those gripes are minor considering how much fun it is to play. And make no mistake, it's a hell of a lot of fun.

Snow Tails on the other hand, sucks ass. It somehow manages to blend the gameplay of both Formula De and The Great Space Race without being as good as either mediocre game. It's got a stupid artificial balancing thing, and any sense of speed or immediacy is completely lost in all the math. I spent the entire game half asleep watching everyone else concentrating intensely, calculating potential card combos, furiously shaking their heads and shrieking something about the inevitability of hitting a tree on their next move.

Fuck that. Toward the end of the last game I just put 5s on both sides of my sled, knocked the brake down to 1, plowed through a bunch of trees into a wall, and wrecked my sled. That was more enjoyable than the rest of the game.

Goethe's "Werther" (*) is pretty funny. The guy couldn't even shoot himself in the head. Slapstick gold!

Of course it's not funny when you're telling it wrong. The joke goes:

Kidding aside, Germans aren't really very funny. Most jokes are just boring irony. I blame the Nazis for that. Germany had some very good humorists in the 1920s, e.g. Tucholsky (**).

I liked Snows Tails (and Powerboats ) because they brought something new to race games. And yes, Snows Tails sucks mightily if you have an APer or two playing. As for Schweigs! earlier gripe about ramming, what more do you want? It has Dent Cards!

LINEAGE II...man, I love that game. I'm glad it went over well with your people, MJ. The combat is a blast, I've never seen so many swings of fortune in the space of about 2 minutes. I wish the game would support 7 or 8 players...it'd still be under two hours.

Everyone was pretty much ready to petition Z-Man to do a release of GtR with a Universalhead redesign. I should have asked UH what he would do with it (he was playing Cosmic Encounter at the other table.)
