Is this in some sort of super secret wargamer code?? I've actually played the second one, know what the first one is and maybe know the fourth. The rest might as well be written in Chinese. I'm proud to know as many as I do. I think.

I just got to try Tales of the Arabian Nights, the latest AT-hotnesss. Woot! I've never played the original either. I had a great time, spending most of the game lost and/or insane. I stole the win right out from under the guy who should have won on the last turn by scrambling to Baghdad and snagging a husband that was just as crazy as me. That gave me the last storytelling point that I needed to win. Fun game, although it didn't really feel like much of a game - more of a social evening of storytelling. My only knock is that all the looking up stuff was kind of fussy and made the game drag a bit. It easily made my future "buy" list. There's nothing like it in my collection.

I got some Dragon Dice in tonight.

First round my buddy just threw together a bunch of random monsters to go up against my Coral Elves. I easily handed his monstrous butts to him. Second game he pulled out the Amazons and showed me just how fast those women can be. They're not loose though, they played the game tight and handed me a quick defeat.

Still awesome. Need to play more.

Lol Susan. Yeah, it's kind of like a test. I really struggled trying to figure out number 4. Let's see how I scored.

ASL - Advanced Squad Leader (that was easy)
CC:E - I thought this was called Command and Colours: Europe but that's not right. Combat Commander: Europe, yes?
SoS - Shit on a Shingle. Which I believe was explained on here as being the same as Creamed Hamburger.
WtP - We the People?
DDaOB - The big stumper.

I think I got a C+.

Yeah but if you don't have the corned beef you can sub with ground beef. That's how we used to do it.

Games:
2 unfinished rounds of Batlestar Galactica. Not the kind of game where you can have drop-outs. Finishing a game with the guys is fucking impossible. Oh well, we had a good time.

1 unfinished game of Runebound

Arkham Horror

Was out of town last week with family. Got to play Arkham Horror and Talisman with my wife.

Arkham Horror is new to me and it was the first time playing it not solo. We each took a single investigator and fought against Yig. The final battle was an easy beat down. My wife liked it and wants to play again. (next time, we'll go against Azathoth)

We play Talisman sort of a lot, so we can have a lot of fun and blow through a game in an hour or less usually. I'm really liking the Dungeon; if you get dealt a crappy character, just go into the Dungeon! You'll either get awesome stuff or you'll quickly die and get a different character; it's win-win. After an early death, my wife came back and won as the sage; I could have won if I had made some different decisions, mainly to get a Talisman. My wife got one early in the game and I just couldn't find a way to finish my Warlock's quest. I had beaten the Lord of Darkness and taken the clockwork owl (instead of a Talisman) and I got the Demigod but got something besides aquisition (which I could have used to get my wife's Talisman). By the time I finished my quest, my wife was already going for the crown and killed me dead with the command spell when I reached the pit fiends.

Great times!

Last Saturday, we played only science-fiction games. It wasn't an intentional theme, just worked out that way.

Star Wars Epic Duels: This was a team fight, Darth Maul and the Emperor versus Obi-Wan and Yoda. I played Darth Maul and came out swinging, nearly killing Obi-Wan during the second turn with a shocking flurry of blows. The counterattack nearly took me out, and we both retreated behind lackeys. The following turn, both characters were dead, leaving the battlefield to Yoda and the Emperor. Their conflict was more complex, with more maneuvering and even some support fire from lackeys. In the end, Yoda prevailed, with a wicked Force Lift special that left the Emperor vulnerable.

Battlestar Galactica: Four player game, nothing special except for some odd leadership (Admiral Thrace and President (Bill) Adama) and one amazing turn. The same guy as always got the Cylon card, so this time he did an early reveal. Late in the game, there was a turn when every single Cylon was on the board, and all of the Raiders were in the same sector, with just Kara Thrace (me) in a Viper to stand against them. Due to some terrible die rolling, she managed to hold them all off with just two Evasive Maneuver cards. The next turn, those Raiders didn't activate, and then the next turn, the fleet jumped. The humans won a little while later.

Android: Four player game, and the sixth time that I've played. This game was particularly frustrating, as the strengths and weaknesses of the game become even more apparent. On the one hand, the game continues to reveal surprising depths of strategy. On the other hand, odd results on the conspiracy puzzle can destroy the theme of the game. This time, we somehow ended up with three connections to the VP bonus for political favors, so the player who grabbed the most political favors (5) was the guy who handily won the game. That large chunk of points diminished the importance of the personal plots, the conspiracy and the murder mystery. Also, I happened to be obsessed with my suspect, but random game play by two other players early on left my suspect on the verge of death the whole game, so I had to abandon the murder investigation to work other elements. I came in third.

Last night played a bit of:
Mr. Jack - The more I play it, the more I like it...It has something to do with the learning curve though. I'm finally starting to see how all the mechanics work together...It felt like the first few games I was just fumbling through it, but it is finally starting to show its meat.

TaYu - Fun abstract. Most abstracts I feel are played in two parts where the first part are the turns that it takes to take the board from the basic setup, mixing it up during play, and then actually having meaningful options to take. Not with TaYu. Every tile draw from the beginning to end presented multiple placement choices that either hurt my opponent, helped me, or really nothing - So there were a lot of possible places and many things to consider when placing a tile.

Small World - Still just a good fun game.

I tried Android for the first time last week, and after all this time, I'm still not sure what I think. No one in our group (3 players) had played a full game before, so it was kind of a bizarro game where I won because my character was obsessed, and I got a slam-dunk on the case.

The game is really dense in terms of mechanics, but it wasn't anything I couldn't handle. The problem was that most of those mechanics didn't really connect to any thematic thing for me. I don't mind abstraction much, but in the case of heavy games, it can really get in the way. At no point did I feel like I was playing my character, and involved in their story. That's too bad.

Still, I'd give the game another crack. It moved fine, and there's clearly more game there (we never even touched the conspiracy).

BTW: I see on TOS that TI3 has the same "game weight" rating as Android. Is TI3 an easier game to learn though, because of it's stronger theme? TI3 has been singing its siren song to me for a while, but various things have stayed my hand.

I like this game too. Although I'll only play it two-player.
