I finally got to try out my new game room this week....I was able to convince my wife to play War of the Ring with me, which is huge. I convinced her by saying we could set it up and leave it setup over a couple nights. I really thought it would take a large part of the week to play, but we burned through the last half really quickly.

close win for the Free peoples, the shadow jumped on Minas tirith quickly and killed Gandalf in Rohan(i was stupid)...then sorta sputtered. she just didn't know what to go after next. but she had fun and is willing to play it again- score!

I like this game too. Although I'll only play it two-player.

Why's that? That was the first time I played the game and it was just two player. My opponent made a comment saying that he thought it would be insteresting to play as teams with four players (at that point I didn't even mention to him that it was an option)...Is there something that just doesn't work with more players?

Yesterday the stars must have been in alignment as the wife and the eldest spawn wanted to play some games. We started off with a few games of Boggle and as ususal my wife kicked my ass. (I'm horrible at word games) Then we played a 2p game of Tribune. It's not that good with only 2 but it is useful for learning. I've played it before and thought it was fun and the wife thought so too after our game. We'd like to get it on the table with 4 or 5 players. And finally the wife got to try out her shiny new copy of TotAN. We all had a good time with that one. It was really funny to see her get bummed that her character got cripled, but when she started racking up double story points because of it she changed her tune. "Being crippled rocks!" Good times...

Its mainly personal preference. Other than trick-taking games I'm just not a fan of partnership games in general and I rarely play trick-taking anymore due to lack of opponents. In a strategy game a partner can be a hindrance more than a help since everyone plays at different skill levels. Also quite a few board gamers who don't actually play well with others. Think of the guy who gets upset when someone doesn't make the correct move in Puerto Rico and blames them for their game loss. That guy is fairly common and not someone I'd want to deal with as a partner in any game.
Now in Ta Yu's case, I actually think the game will work best as a light strategy game for two-players. With three it becomes 2 against 1. With four you aren't allowed to talk about the game (per the rules) so you're only placing every 4th tile, which makes an already light game too light-weight as there's really no planning ahead. The same problem is in Carcassonne when there's too many people playing.

I played a two-player game of Agricola last night, and I remembered how much I enjoy that game. It's definitely a Euro game, but it's one of the best.

Last Saturday my group played a five player game of Fury of Dracula in which Dracula kept barely evading our grasp. 'Twas awesome.

Last Week:
Fast Flowing Forest Fellers - An ok 6
Dice Town - A random 6
Moai - A brutal 6.5

Monday Night:
Talisman with my daughter. My favorite game to play with her. We had a blast. I need to get replacement strength, will, health markers from FFG or somewhere. I hate the counter they use in my version.

Tonight:
Wellington

The old one (2nd Ed? 3rd?) used little colored plastic cones you would nest in each other. I thought those were great. Try and track down some of those bad boys.

3rd edition. The new one actually has plastic stacking cones for stats, too, but it sounds like KingPut has the BI 4th edition.

Went to game night tonight. I got to try out a couple of turns of Wings of War: Dawn of WWII. That was pretty fun. Not that radically different from the WWI games, but they're pretty fun games.

Then we played a 4-player game of Tales of the Arabian Nights. Fun game. Lots of really zany stuff happens. I managed to get imprisoned, ensorcelled a couple of times, blessed, beaten up by a princess in disguise. I wasn't even close to winning, I was really low on destiny points the entire game. But overall a very fun storytelling game. Totally random, though. You never know if your skills will help or hinder you.

HAd 5 friends around at my place and we played two games of LNoE (both narrow human wins). LNoE was relatively new to all of us but went down very well. First game was basic scenario, second was manor house. With unorthodox tactics (defend the house from the outside) we narrowly managed to prevent an early run on the house by the mass of zombies, drawing them away by sacrificing ourselves. All 8 hero characters were used over the course of the game.

Then with five we played two games of Adel Vepflichtet. Not so new to some of us, it was played with great enthusiasm. First game was a runaway win, as everybody stole from everybody, except the later winner. Second game very close finish, decided by last exhibition.

This game is a euro at heart, but because of the double guessing between thieves, detectives and cash/exhibitions the game has incredible fun. Best possible argument for 'old skool' euros.

Great night, but now I have to sweep the mess out of the house...

Someone at the local game club brought Race to the Galaxy! (The one time I took it there, there was indifference and bafflement at the complexity.) Because three of them had been playing it at home, it received a better reception (okay, so one new person was introduced). And yes, I know some of you won't be impressed, but it's an improvement on Dominion! (Intrigue is starting to pale for some of them already...)

Yea, I bought the BI 4th edition from Tanga for like $19.00. But I wish I spent $40.00 for the FFG version. The only thing I like about the BI version is the "You are Evil cards". They crack me up every time. The FFG evil card just as boring graphics on it. I'll probably track downs so cones or some other marker sometime down the road.

Wellington was good on Wednesday night.

Thursday night me and spawn started Arkham Horror - Innsmouth with 2 characters each. We're about halfway through.
