Im still coming down from A Quiet Place. Last night in bed I wondered if my snoring would get me in trouble, I’d wake up to a bunch of teeth. That was it for falling asleep peacefully after that..

Finally watched Dunkirk last night. All those people bitching about Rogue One not developing characters enough should completely avoid this movie. Nolan doesn't even try to develop them and the movie is far better for it. No exposition or traditional story structure either. I thought it was a really well constructed film and its become rare nowadays that I watch a movie at home and don't check my phone or anything. Was glued to the screen for the entire runtime.

I saw A Quiet Place yesterday, and I'm pretty mixed on it. (No spoilers other than the premise.)

I really liked the idea that everyone had to stay quiet to stay alive. It built incredible tension in the subtlest ways and allowed for some really great scenes. I love storytelling that is done visually, and this gave them the perfect excuse to do it in spades. But it also opened up so many plot and world-building questions that I found myself thinking about practicalities and other problems that I really shouldn't have been thinking about during the movie. So much of it really doesn't make any sense.

I also thought it had too many jump scares. Those are so easy and such lazy filmmaking, that it sort of undermined all the wonderful tension they built throughout the whole movie. Plus, when the movie is so very very quiet, the sudden, jarring blare of music or sound makes you jump just as an instinctual, physical reaction. Cheap.

Dunkirk is kind of a Doctor Zhivago film. You're witnessing history, and that's the main draw of the film.

I found the three-part montage confusing, muddied up the timeline for me. But the scenery was very good and each part told its story.

The RAF scenes made no sense. But they never do, so I just enjoyed the pretty planes.

Greg, did you read my review? I agree that your brain goes into overtime trying to 'solve' their problem, making you question a ton of their choices the entire time.

That also means you're DEEPLY engaged in their survival though which is awesome.

My girlfriend is still talking about Black Panther. She is slightly more critical of the movie now, but still fascinated by the challenging ideas addressed by the movie. Usually she only needs about five minutes at the most to express her reaction to a movie after we have seen, and then she is done talking about it forever.

Not yet, and I'm about to head out so I'll have to check it out tomorrow to give it the attention it deserves. It wasn't just their choices I questioned, but lots of elements of the whole established world that bugged me as well. More of that tomorrow.

However, I did find this quote from RogerEbert.com, which I found startlingly similar to what I said:

With almost no dialogue, “A Quiet Place” relies a great deal on visual storytelling, but I'll admit that it also uses the crutches of composer Marco Beltrami's strings for jump scares a bit too much. It’s total conjecture, but one can almost sense Platinum Dunes head Michael Bay insisting on those devices, and I’d love to see a version of “A Quiet Place” that’s even sparser in terms of on-the-nose choices like sound-scares and an overheated score.

I saw Total Recall, the Ahnuld one, in the theater. A couple in front of me walked out during the scene where Ahnuld is using a mook/bystander as a human shield. I think they were up for the Phillip K. Dick mind games, but weren't expecting quite so much ultraviolence. I guess they didn't read the review.

Dracula Untold has become something of a guilty pleasure for me I guess. Once you jump over the mental hurdle of Dracula being the good guy its actually a fun movie. I love the swarm of bats and watching him take out entire armies by himself. I can definitively say that while its not a great film its a million times better than that Cruise/Mummy shitfest.
