Went and saw a 30th anniversary screening of "They Live" at IU Cinema last night. Great movie, great crowd. My buddy who went with me asked if Rowdy Roddy did any other films and I told him about "Hell Comes to Frogtown".

That movie should be played 24/7 nowadays.

Each passing day it becomes more and more relevant.

In Morocco, Malika is the lead singer for an all-female punk band called Traitors. They have a chance at a recording deal, but need money to pay for studio time. Her family is also struggling financially, so Malika turns to crime. She is conflicted about everything. She is a bold, brave punk, but she is smart enough to understand that she lives in a repressive patriarchy. So she knows that sometimes she needs to stuff down her outrage and avert her eyes, mind her manners. Other times... "If you are a hammer, STRIKE"

Traitors is a tense crime drama, and a timely one for this specific moment in history in the United States. Many American men are absolutely clueless about the abuse that the women around them face. The creepy stares, the cheesy lines, the groping, the bullying, the assaults and the rapes. Women know, and sometimes they try to tell us. Other times, they just can't deal because they know that many men will dismiss them outright, or worse, slut-shame them. Things are somewhat worse for women in other countries, like Morocco, and this movie sheds some light.

Adult World was okay. John Cusack was in it, and I still had fond memories of recently watching High Fidelity. But it's actually more of an Emma Roberts and Evan Peters movie, which was fine because I'm a fan of American Horror Story. Adult World is about a young, idealistic poet who gets a job at a store that sells sex toys and rents out porn movies.

John Cusack plays a less talented Bill Murray. Evan Peters plays a young Jesse Eisenberg, right down to the hair style and color. Emma Roberts chews on the scenery and goes too broad with the comedy. Adult World wants to be a funny coming of age story, but it falls short on the comedy and relies too heavily on banal platitudes. It's not a bad movie, just an average one.

I watched Quigley Down Under which I haven't seen for about 25 years. Its held up pretty well. Alan Rickman is always a great villain and it's cool seeing Australia shot Western-style.

In the past week, I've seen two excellent genre offerings (horror) on Netflix.

The first has been available for some months. 'Ritual.' It's based off the book of the same name from Adam Neville. Middle aged Brits go hiking in Sweden. It does not go well. Well acted, well directed, and the FX is well designed and employed.

The second dropped onto the service last week. 'The Endless.' I went into it with full skepticism because the Netflix summary sentence sounds positively stupid. I'm glad I stuck with it. It's a slow burn until it's not. The last 1/3 is just mind boggling. The director duo has another film done a few years ago. I immediately sought it out, and will view once my wife falls asleep. 'Spring.'

I liked The Endless, too. Some really impressive and evocative visual effects for what must have been a very low budget. And the story is decent. A few small aspects of the acting and dialogue are clunky, but mostly that’s solid, too.

I love Red Hill which sets a western in a modern Australian small town. The Proposition is the more acclaimed Australian western but I like Red Hill more.

I'm a big Benson and Moorhead fan.

I think Spring is their best film but The Endless comes really close. Now that you've seen The Endless you should probably see Resolution (their first film.)

Their next film has known actors in it - Jamie Dornan (from the Fall) and Anthony Mackie (aka The Falcon.) It will be interesting to see what they do with a real budget.

Just watched The Invitation on Netflix. This is a movie about a dinner party among estranged friends... something doesn't seem quite right. Is it the protagonist's imagination?

Highly recommended. It's a slow burn but it pays off.

Yes, this is a case where the destination is better than the journey. Journey is fine, but the ending really makes it worthwhile.

I saw a preview of Bad Times at the El Royale which is very much a single location, tense conversations and shocking action Tarantino thing. It was ok, if you're bored it's worth a watch. It's just that the dialog wasn't as good as a better Tarantino, the movie was too long which is killer for this style film, and it just didn't build the tension as high as it needed to be.

Funny to see Thor as Charles Manson standin though.
