No mirrorshade implant, no deadly claws in her fingertips, just some quick HTH moves and attitude. And they added a new villain who was a towering Jesus freak allegedly loaded up with cybernetics, which felt like an affront to cyberpunk as a genre.

Watched the new Coen Brothers movie on Netflix, Ballad of Buster Scruggs. It should have been called Ballad of Boring and Slow.

Ballad of Awesomeness 9/10
Seriously, some top notch Coen old west goodness. Some vignettes better than others, but man oh man are some of them fantastic, like the “title track” and “Meal Ticket.”

It didn't do it for me. It's visually gorgeous, but the only part I thought was really good was the bit with James Franco.

That was my least favorite one. Go figure. But even that one had some great moments. Pan shot!!

Yeah, this is really getting mixed reviews. It made me want to read something historically accurate about the old west. It was just absurdly comic, and suddenly brutal. I thought I was bored of the final episode, but then ended up rewatching it. The whole thing felt like it could have been written by Ambrose Bierce, on acid.
The Oregon Trail episode was and is haunting. There are moments of poignancy amidst the carnage.

It works just fine in sequence, but some tracks — the one with James Franco as a dumb bank robber, for instance — only need to be played once. Others invite a specific needle drop: Kazan’s expression of surprise when she receives a marriage proposal; her awkward conversations with Bill Heck; her utterly natural delivery of the word “apothegm”; Waits stealing eggs from an owl’s nest and then putting all but one of them back.

Writing on the website Screen Rant, John Orquiola argues that "The Mortal Remains" is a parable of navigating the passage from life into death, and that "it is strongly implied" that the three travelers, the Lady, the Frenchman and the Trapper, are souls being ferried to their last resting place, represented by Fort Morgan.[10]

Yes, the one with Zoe Kazan and President Pierce was also wonderful! I love the way the Coens use language, very distinctly and colorfully for every character, and that episode really exemplified that. The whole thing just has a beautiful tone to it, and captures the best and worst of what we envision (whether rightly or in many ways, not) about that era.

Yep, count me in the "Loved it!" camp for Buster Scruggs.
I'm not completely sure which segment I'd call my "favorite," but that opening track is just so unabashedly weird, silly, funny, cruel, and violent that it perfectly blows your mind open to whatever the Coens have planned for the rest of the segments.

Watched Eighth Grade because it was a dollar rental on iTunes.

Nothing happened. I was hoping it was a build up to the girl being murdered like some messed up found footage film where they pull her out of a trash compactor. Just to see something, ANYTHING, happen.

It was so completely banal that I’ll have forgotten the whole thing tomorrow. I’d rather watch a YouTube celebrity’s reaction video to Five Nights at Freddy’s for two hours

I enjoyed Buster Scruggs but it's well below the Coen's best top work.
I was amused at the "Pot shot!" scene. I think my favorite vignette was the one with Liam Neason, particularly for the ending. With all of these I kept wondering "where is this going?" and usually it delivered.
I also appreciated the metaphor of the final sequence and how it kind of wrapped everything up.
